Forums - Gaming Discussion - Square Enix presents new strategy: spend less money on HD games and more on Mobile games

Does their new engine run on smartphones? :D

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

"Square Enix new strategy: How to stay irrelevant"

fixed it according to my opinion.

There's a difference between being relevant and making money.  This will keep them afloat, but how will that make them what they once were?  What if they shed Eidos off?  I'm sure I speak for many when I say I don't want those crappy Final Fantasy games they've been making for the iOS platform.

They will kill them seft they begin by the destruction of Final Fantasy.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

New strategy: same as the old strategy.

Square will never *ever* be what they were, in my opinion. FF8 started it all, 9 was the last hope, everything after was not Square anymore to me (at least concerning FF). I liked the remakes for the DS but every new FF game just disappointed me. Let them port every nes-snes-game to ios/android, I don't care. And also take a look at this ridiculous thing: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=554202&highlight=fantasy

SE deserves to be in the situation they are now.

Gamers have been asking Versus XIII, FFXV and KH3 for years, instead what they make are souless games like FFXIII and XIII-2 and turn Dragon Quest X in an MMO.

Meet the new boss!

Same as the old boss!

Seriously though:  The fact that Square has to set such basic goals like "Construct a product portfolio tailored to consumer tastes in respective served regions" (aka "Knowing Your Target Market 101") is both hilarious and appauling in the sense that they hadn't done this already.  Or "Improve turnover of development" *claps* 8 years into the HD gen, soon to be moving to another gen, and Square Enix finally realizes "We can't spend 5 to 8 years on each title and expect to remain in the black".

Goddamn, how did Wada stay CEO for as long as he did when he was running the ship like that?

They can't be stopped...

They should just refocus on quality

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

The last line is sickening. That means they still think that Japan should receive Japanese games and the West the western ones. It means they have no plans for Type-0 or Drakengard 3 outside Japan, that they don't give a sh** about Bravery Default or DQVII unless Nintendo foots the bill. This logic of shutting regions in their presumed own "culture" (like this would be completely uniform) and denying cultural diversity and exchanges is absolutely disgusting and recessive.

I think this is probably being exaggerated. They are saying they want to be more efficient in their development, ie not spend 10 years on Versus

I don't think this is going to be the end of big blockbuster games, I think (hope) there will just more focus on quality and avoidance of bloated developments that we have seen recently
