Definitely agree with your statement ! But I think they should do more than just using a new fresh coat of paint on the next entry. |

That's too bad. From what I heard, despite the rather samey graphics and design we've seen throughout the NSMB series, its a really well-designed and well-executed game. The issue it had, at the time, was that's release coincided with NSMB2 in 2012, which didn't help matters as it set an environment in which there was NSMB fatigue. Heck, the last game that released prior to those two was NSMBWii in 2009, which sold like crazy at the time. While I get having a completely new style would be nice, it would kinda suck if NSMBUDX becomes a dud. However, I don't know if we could assume if it's going to be a dud so far at this point. 2D Mario games have great legs so I wouldn't count out anything yet. |
It is too bad, in that U was better than 2, but 2 sold better because it was on the 3DS rather than the Wii U. Releasing at the same time definitely didn't help. However I think UDX's problem is that they didn't try hard enough with it. It's basically the same game with a few new features, mostly just a new character and powerup. I believe it combines NSMBU and NSLU, but it really shouldn't be a deluxe version of those games, it should have been a remastered collection of all NSMB games and levels, as well as all the multiplayer options, both co-op and competitive, of all of them, along with new stuff like Toadette and the Super Crown, but not just one character and powerup but a decent number of additions. That's something that would be worth my money. As it stands, I'll just stick with my Wii U versions, and I think most people will, and while it won't be an utter dud, it will be a dud by 2D Mario standards, and that may be what Nintendo needs right now to motivate it to try harder. 2D Mario is one of their most prized milking cows, no way they let it dry up, they'll take drastic action, and that's what we need to get the 2D Mario we deserve.
Going forward, yes Mar, when I said "whole new style" I meant style like in the Mario Maker sense of the word, not just a new look, but new mechanics and gameplay and approaches to level and world design. 2D Mario could be more than what it is, and I think it could stand to have an Odyssey level reinvention. Which isn't to say I want 2D Mario to be like Odyssey, but that I want it to be reinvented like Odyssey reinvented 3D Mario from 3D World to Odyssey by looking back at games like 64 and Sunshine and reimagining them with modern updates to gameplay. 2D Mario could learn a lot from SMW in reinventing itself, I think of all the 2D games, that one felt the most like a place you could go and have an adventure, rather than a series of themed obstacle courses with the same themes each time shuffled around a bit (grass, desert, water, ice, jungle, mountain, cloud, fire) and a new powerup each time. Odyssey got rid of lives, repurposed coins, and had a whole new way of doing powerups. While 2D Mario need not do all that, Odyssey did that because lives were an outdated game mechanic from a time when difficulty was a substitute for content to pad game length, and coins and powerups had so much more potential waiting for a bit of imagination. The same could hold true for 2D Mario.
