I really hope it's a new engine and not just a slightly improved version...

If it was slightly improved they wouldn't exactly be calling it "next-generation" would they?

I just wonder if they'll be able to maintain the 60FPS on current-gen....

Well it will be a cross-gen game so it isn't exactly likely that Activision will put in very much effort for the next-gen version when they could just improve the current gen engine slightly and slap a new name on it.

That's not gonna pass when we have games like Battlefield 4 coming at the end of the year. Their new engine will at least match the best looking current-gen FPS. This new game also gives them the perfect time to do it. New characters, new story, and probably even a new developer.(I heard Neversoft was making this one)

I used to feel the same way. but it is what it is. people still seem to like the gameplay. I personally dont, but others seem too. I do think that the next gen will be the best time for another shooter to try and take the crown. we will see.

I honestly feel that CODs success has actually done more harm to the industry then good and seeing it go the way of Guitar Hero would put such a huge smile on my face. but thats another thread and another discussion

Harmed the industry? How? By bringing in billions of dollars every year?

I'm fairly certain it'll be a brand new engine. Activision even demoed their proprietary engine at GDC. They wouldn't just put that engine to waste by doing another iteration on the Quake 3 engine.

Honestly though, I don't expect the graphics on current gen consoles to improve much even with a newer engine. COD will always prefer 60 FPS over good graphics. The only reason BF and Crysis can have such good console graphics is because they run at 30 FPS. COD will always need to run at 60 FPS to keep it's gameplay that everyone is hooked on. A new engine will help a lot in getting rid of the many gameplay issues that pop up in MP in regards to character movement and intrinsic lag in the game.

The place where this game could really shine is on next gen platforms though. I think it has the chance to look amazing and play at 60 FPS on next gen platforms.

Next generation because that's the engine they'll be using from then on. Doesn't automatically mean that it's a huge improvement.
No Call of Duty developer ever created a new engine from the ground up. They are all just adding minor to medium sized improvements to an engine from 1999 year after year.

Though maybe they'll be using this one:

By being the only game millions of gamers play so they don't step out and try/buy new different games.  It hurts the industry when a chunk of gamers stop buying anything but the same game every year.

Those gamers who buy COD/Madden/Fifa only wouldn't buy other games if these mainstream games didn't come out every year. Gaming to them isn't something important like it is to us. They just get on a weekend for a few hours and have a quick game with their friends and get off. They could give up gaming altogether and it wouldn't make much difference to them.

You can't lump them together in the same category as gamers who are looking for a lot of different experiences. The only thing COD is doing is bringing tons of these "mainstream" gamers who may not have cared much for gaming and introducing them to gaming. Some of them may actually go out and buy different games after playing COD and eventually become long time gamers, which is good for the industry.

Obviously that's the one they'll be using. Whether that is a big improvement/upgrade to the current engine doesn't matter. It looks great. Graphics aren't what makes COD fun anyway. They definitely help though.

So its guilty of being fun and addicting? Here's a thought, developers should try and create fun original games instead of trying to copy COD. Maybe then people will buy their games instead.....

Do you seriously think that if Call of Duty stopped releasing that people would buy something else? Many wouldn't buy anything at all and many would just move on to something like Battlefield. Not everyone is into video games as much as you are. Not everyone wants to buy dozens of games a year. I don't see what the problem is with people buying only 1 or 2 games a year.

Can't have gaming forums without people complaining about Call of Duty and wanting it to die.

One of the best FPS games regardless of people hating on it. Anything that is popular gets hated on so that is ok.

I hope it does have a new engine :) Maybe improve on some of the things that they have done wrong in previous games to make it a little more balanced.

Think I'll wait untill the 2015 version, haven't played since Black Ops 1 because of the minute improvements in grapics, game design and bogus way of spawning endless enemies.

Hopefully they'll be on top of all that in '15.
