Forums - Politics - While other states are legalizing Marijuana, New york is setting true American Freedom back and trying to ban 18-20 year olds from buying cigarettes

I'd prefer banning mcdonalds and soft drinks (lol they already tried that) because everyone is too fat and gets in my way. It's much more difficult avoiding a herd of fatties that make my insurance rates go up. They get heart attacks on the freeway and slow down traffic on my way to work.

Much more annoying than having a random smoker that I can walk around.

;).

New York wants stop people under 21 from developing a disgusting habit which causes you to stink out of your mouth, and slowly kill yourself?

Will the injustice never cease?!

If they want to why not let them? You could argue for banning all unhealthy food for people under 21 as well. Not to mention force people to do mandatory exercise since it may be good for their health.

e'g' New York wants to stop people under 21 from becoming lazy unhealthy slobs by mandating 45 min of daily exercise reducing obesity and health problems?

Will the injustice never cease?!

I knew someone was going to respond with some nonsense like that. As if cigarettes and unhealthy food is the same thing.

Ok......

1. Food, healthy or otherwise is a necessity. We all have to eat to survive, but people like different things, and also have varying budgets in terms of the quality of food we can afford. So of course we have free choice in what we eat. Smoking is not a necessity.

2. Food, healthy or otherwise stimulates our taste buds. We eat things that we perceive to taste good. Cigarettes are disgusting. This is a fact. Nobody who picks up a cigarette for the first time perceives it as an enjoyable experience. It is a habit developed purely out of one form of pressure or another.

And as for how lazy or physically active a person chooses to be, of course we can't influence that. Are you actually trying to draw a parallel between that and banning harmful substances?

Let me make something clear, if people want to smoke, so be it. Nobody can stop you if you really want to smoke. Likewise, if you live in the US, and really want to buy a gun and shoot yourself, nobody can stop you from doing that either. That's an extreme example, but the point is that when people really have their mind set on something, they will always find a way to do so. Does that mean we should make the harmful choices particularly easy to follow through on? I hope not

poor people cant afford to eat healthy? What a laughable statement. if people are THAT poor then they qualify for food stamps.

Cigarettes are disgusting is a fact? I think you'll have a bunch of people arguing with you there. Thats more like an opinion.

I don't smoke, but this post is absurd

I didn't try smoking until I was 22 because I was straight edge whatever adolecsent label you want to apply. I've smoked probably like a pack or two of ciggarettes my whole life and like 5 cigars. I don't smoke regularly, because it's bad for you. But, I definetly think it tastes good. I may be an abberation, and I think Coffee and Alchohol tastes terrible.

Eating healthy and cheap is easy. Eat cheerios and milk for breakfast. Then cook grilled chicken breasts and rice for dinner or an assortment of other cheap meats, and eat smaller portions (it's always cheaper to eat smaller portions). I know, because I lived 2 or 3 years on 15k a year while going to school. It's not quite black and white as there's probably less of an array of cheap good foods than cheap junk foods especially if you get fast food (which is bad if you're on a low budget).

I didn't say poor people can't afford to eat healthy, but obviously people living on different budgets will often eat different foods, and have different quality foods. I could list countless examples to that end, but I really don't think it's necessary. You probably just misunderstood me.

Cigarettes being disgusting IS a fact. Of course, if you keep smoking them, and allow it to become am addiction they will eventually become "good" to you. However, like I said in the last post...nobody who picks up a cigarette for the first time actually enjoys the taste. They cough, they weeze, and make some sort of grimace with their face. I see it all the time here in Germany, as smoking is a serious problem here. Anybody who claims they liked the taste of a cigarette the first time they tried it is full of shit.

I have plenty of friends who smoke, and they would all testify to this.

Cheerios? Hell, if you are really strapped for cash you can buy the generic Tasty O's. Same thing. Bold: Yup, it aint thathard to live on a budget. Me and my wife earned 20k last year (going to be less this year since I elected to not work) and we did just fine in Milwaukee.

Nobody? well.. looks like one person here already disproved that. They cough and weeze because they didn't do it right. If it were so disgusting less people would do it. But since thats subjective a lot of people actually like it. Where have I seen people grimace before... oh yeah spinach... must mean thats disgusting is a fact. Or alcohol must be a fact too

The thing is, most people probably take up smoking before they are 21. Once you're 21 if you don't smoke already there's a very slim chance you'll ever take it up. So, arguably setting the buying age at 21 might be effective at reducing the youth uptake of smoking and getting some people over the hump into adulthood where they are unlikely to ever start up.

On the other hand, loads of kids take up smoking well before they are legally able to purchase cigarettes, so does an age limit on cigarette sales actually work?

Were not making it easy for people by treating people considered adults as by the law as adults. If you want to ban 18 year olds from smoking then you are making the distinction that they cannot be expected to make responsible decisions and are therefore not capable of being considered adults in the eye's of the law. Also many people would argue that they find unhealthy food's disgusting or that they don;t smoke cigarettes for the taste but rather the effect and it come's down to (for me at least) saying that it's their body, their fucking decision. If you don't like the decision's they've made well too bad for you cause it's not your buisiness.

Also calling someone full of shit for stating their personal taste is rude and completely unfounded.
