Forums - Sony Discussion - Will I be able to sell PS4 pre-order at a high price?

Do you really think PS4 will sell out, when

i) It uses well understood hardware from well tested manufacturing plants, unlike the PS3
ii) It will be competingat $400+ vs. a $99 360 and a presumably sub-$200 PS3 with almost all of the same games available
iii) All of one's friends are still on Live/PSN and not on the new service, and
iv) Wii U didn't

WHAAAAAA? You mean to tell me that after a 300$ console didn't sell massive amounts, a console that will have about the same quality library, no backwards compatibility and at least 100$ more expensive....and people wont be out buying it in droves?  Dude what are you on?

Realism is one hell of a drug.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

it depends on suppy and demand. that simple really.

preorder resale is only very profitable on shortages or when offering shipping into markets where the console isn't available on initial release. I suspect though as others have mentioned that there won't be any significant profits available this time around for any of the consoles, too much competition. Also a lot of the high prices listed on ebay for Wii U never got sold (don't confuse greedy resellers listing high prices with actual sales).

have any thoughts regarding the edit?

With both MSony launching at same time frame at likely prices nearing $500, I'd wouldn't bet on it.

Plus Nintendo already demonstrated how to best avoid eBay reselling. Continuous retail deliveries.

Keep in mind WiiU sold very well in its Nov/Dec launch. I'd expect MSony to follow that scenario and there won't be much of any return on any eBay options.

Artificial shortages. I hear companies deliberately send out too few consoles to force shortages, making consumers think the product is in high demand.

Has this ever definitely happened?

It's repeated as a joke so much that people takes it for truth.

Truth through repitition.

That's a very stupid conspiracy.  Considering if they purposefully do that then people will just go and buy XBOX instead which causes them to lose business rather than gain business.  What good is hype if people can't BUY the console?  It's not like Sony makes extra money off the inflated eBay sales.  So this logic is just....dumb.

The reason for sell outs is because the company either isn't confident enough to take enough pre-orders OR they underestimate the demand.  No company wants their product to sell out because it means LESS SALES.  The WII U sold out in the first month before release because they didn't offer up enough pre-orders.  People went nuts because they didn't realize the system wasn't all that great yet.   You could sell it for $550-600 on eBay during the few weeks before release.

But then some people waited too long and ended up LOSING money because they started selling for $350.  After ebay & paypal fees they were $50 in the hole and were forced to abide by that price since they did an AUCTION style listing.   Plus those people had to front the money for the system since they didn't sell until after release day.

This time around I don't see there being much room for profit here.  Sony already sent out a statement to retailers that they can take unlimted pre-orders for the PS4 until they say otherwise.  Gamestop has like 10 different bundles and every store is doing pre-orders from the big stores to even sites that don't even specialize in video games.

The PS4 will probably never sell out.  I'd say maybe there will be a very small window around Christmas time where there is  slight doubt from parents trying to buy one for their kids.  That will be the moment where you could make some profit on eBay if you're lucky.  But doing it that way you would have to front the entire cost of the system while you wait for Christmas time.   Not worth it really unless you got disposable funds like that.  Plus the hassle of packaging, shipping, creating the listing, and the eBay and PayPal fees which together amount to about 10% of the sale price.

XBOX One Day One edition might provide some room for profit since they are LIMITED.  Meaning if you don't get the system on release day you don't have any other chance to get the Day One edition.  I could see some fanboys paying extra money to get one if they missed out on pre-ordering.  But again you'll have to front the money for the system unless you get lucky and sell it a few weeks before release for profit.

...and also the only difference is a small white branding that says "Day One" on the controller and the system.  Really not much else special about it.

I sold my Wii U for over a 500$ on ebay. It was a launch edition. Plus, people are already getting over 400$ for PS4's on eBay.

i would seriously spend my time buying cheap games and trade them into game for store credit, then get a free PS4 and then sell it on eBay.

That way you probably spent like $200 to get $400 worth of credits and if you sell at cost you still make $200. Anything above is a bonus.

I doubt that is going to be the case. Both of these companies NEED for their install bases to be as large as possible for differing reasons.

MS had a LOT of bad PR and with the negatives surrounding the XB1 a slow start would just mean more for Sony. Sony needs to make some money and solidify its self as a dominate console here in the states. Sure the PS3 is now outselling the 360 world wide but it took a lot of resources and money to get that accomplished. These two companies are going to do their level best to make sure everyone who wants a next-gen console will be able to get their hands on one....

The parts for these consoles are readily available and less proprietary than last gen's. It's not stopping people from posting the craziest pricing for them on eBay but I suspect that when the demand is met at retail these listings will come down.
