Artificial shortages. I hear companies deliberately send out too few consoles to force shortages, making consumers think the product is in high demand.

I doubt that is going to be the case. Both of these companies NEED for their install bases to be as large as possible for differing reasons.

MS had a LOT of bad PR and with the negatives surrounding the XB1 a slow start would just mean more for Sony. Sony needs to make some money and solidify its self as a dominate console here in the states. Sure the PS3 is now outselling the 360 world wide but it took a lot of resources and money to get that accomplished. These two companies are going to do their level best to make sure everyone who wants a next-gen console will be able to get their hands on one....

The parts for these consoles are readily available and less proprietary than last gen's. It's not stopping people from posting the craziest pricing for them on eBay but I suspect that when the demand is met at retail these listings will come down.
