Forums - Microsoft Discussion - UPDATE! vgleaks: Microsoft Xbox Roadmap (2013) - possible bc, online not required, used games allowed

hopefully the MS event is still on track for may, and with Sony supposedly announcing something "big" during the same time as well, looks like it will be and exciting ride to E3 and beyond!!!

good sum up from a GAFer (BlazingDarkness):

My understanding of the devices;

XBOX360 Mini device
- No disc drive, so it's essentially useless as a standalone XBOX for gaming, but good for TV functionality alone
- Requires an internet connection to function
- Access to the XBL marketplace and whatnot (so it can play downloadable titles)
- Will share some features of the Durango TV (IPTV) functionality (to combat Apple TV)
- Required to play 360 games, when connected with the Durango, can NOT play 360 discs when not connected

Durango
- The new 'new' XBOX
- Plays Durango games etc, uses Kinect functionality
- Will not play 360 games, you must hook up the Mini device once you insert a 360 disk to play (you put the 360 disc in the Durango disc tray, but it runs only when connected with the Mini)
- Requires an internet connection for TV functionality
- Plays used games
- Plays offline games

This kind of reminds me of the Genesis and the Power Base Converter. It's not exactly the same thing, but the Genesis couldn't play Master System games with out the Power Base Converter. It was Sega's way of brining the big library of Master System games over to the Genesis before the Genesis was able to build it's own killer library of games.

I hope the Sting Ray and Durango look as cool together as the Genesis Model 1 and the Power Base Converter:

Doesn't that just look badass? I have a Master System, but I keep my Power Base Convert on my Genesis Model 1 anyway.

I wonder how much money they would actually save by excluding it from Durango. It's not like the Xbox360 used any super customized parts like the CELL processor of the PS3 (at least none that I am aware of), so I think it certainly would be possible to have the BC with the rumored specs, so no additional cost for BC.

Seems like they just want to squeeze as much money out as possible (understandable from their point of view), but I wonder how many people would buy a Durango and a BC box...

You would need a bigger motherboard and more input power which means more heat which also means a bigger console for gamers who don't care about BC and it would also mean that you would have to pay for BC even though you don't want it, besides it's not like the cpu/gpu in the xbox 360 costs 5$ to make.

I owned this converter :) But 360 mini is definitely other than this as it can function on its own and will. Wonder if sales of this thing will get counted to 360-sales on this site ;)

Hmm, that's a good questions. It's kind of like a PSP Go in that it only plays digital downloads. If the PSP Go was counted toward the PSP total I could see the StingRay counting toward the 360 total. But if MS markets it as a completely different device that happens to have XBLA functions then I wouldnt' count it as a 360 variant.

Yeah, pretty much software emulation. Wasn't the factor 10 always thrown around for software emulation? I'm pretty sure the Durango will end up 10x stronger than the Xbox360 and with the emulation handeled by a professional team with all the needed info I'm pretty sure the Durango could have a near-perfect software-based BC if Microsoft wanted it. But obviously making gamers who want it pay twice will turn out more profitable for Microsoft^^

Something smells really fishy.

Not sure yet what's up. I want this rumor to be true but it is so fake looking.

No emulation requires especially cpu-power and rumor has it that they use jaguar like Sony. The cpu is not very fast in this. NextBox and Sony have way more power but also especially because of gpu and I don't know how much you can offload emulation-tasks to gpgpu. And even if you could they also have to use the gpu to make 3d-stuff run on NextBox. I don't say it's totally impossible but seems very hard to do. Just look at Dolphin, the gamecube and Wii emulator, what the requirements are and now think of how much more power 360 has.

To bolded: Sony wants you to pay for bc, too. They do with PS3 and will with PS4 (with what we have still to be seen performance with Gaikai).

What was your opinion to the bad rumors?
