this has been known since 07 when Eu ps3 played disk ps2 games w/o HW emulation

why is in not in the newer models my quess so sony can get easy $$ on psn from ps2 classics much like theyve done from ps home

If they want easy money they should just sell the emulator. I'd pay $60 for it.

People who don't own retail discs will still buy the PS2 Classics on PSN. While many of us with discs would gladly buy an emulator.

Isnt this illegal?

How could it possibly be illegal modify your property to play your property.

What's criminal is that Sony is sitting on fully functioning PS2 backwards compatability and forcing people to re-purchase thier PS2 Classic games they already own on disc from the PSN store.

can you imagine that shitstorm that came down on Sony if they officially release software emulation that doesn't work with EVERY game?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

The 360 has done pretty well without consistent BC.

Have some time to kill? Read my shitty games blog. http://www.pixlbit.com/blogs/586/gigantor21

:D

That's like saying my PC is backward compatible with every system ever made....

That's great. But since people keep buying HD re-releases an classics, Sony will never release this to the public.
I myself value online access far more than a PS2 emulator

Don't even no why im replying to this but....

It requires CFW to run which if you use will void your warrenty plus you will have to illgally download or copy ps2 games to play them on your ps3....Makes sense aye?

It's also not criminal that sony doesn't use this software, people dont have to rebuy anything!?!?! you just keep your ps2 its that simple. When you buy your ps3 you no full well that it isn't going to play ps2 games, and if I were sony I wouldnt use the software that would only support 70-90% of ps2 games.

It's discussion.

Isn't it legal to mod your PS3?

There are catches, but you are legally allowed to modify your PS3. You void your warrenty and can't go on PSN anymore, but modding a PS3 is prefectly legal.

What's illegal is downloading ROMs of games you don't own. If you own the game, then a ROM is a legal backup, otherwise it's an illegal pirated copy.

I dunno, I think that's what it's like in Canada.

Exactly, it's the one reason I still have a PS2 in the house.

Don't want a big piracy deabte though, we all sit on one side of the fence or the other with this stuff.

I genuinely think this technologicially amazing though, the PS3 is a dog to program for in terms of emulation, I do follow the hacking scene with the PS3 and the emulators that have been turned out so far and run at a decent speed stop at the NeoGeo. The PS2 is possibly harder to emulate than the Xbox 360 due to it's architecture too.

Business is business and we all know the score as far as money grabbing goes, same goes for Microsoft and Nintendo so I'm not going to compare on that level, in this case though, maybe nobody would use it. But a full PS2 emulation would surely give Sony a boost, much more than the PS2 Classic sales would be worth.

...Bit late now though I spose with the PS4 on the way but hey ho :)

Voiding warrenty isn't illegal. Modifying your property isn't illegal. Backing up your property isn't illegal. None of that is illegal. It may be a breach of contract with the EULA, but that's not a crime.

Emulation is not illegal.

When I said it's criminal that Sony sits on backwards compatbility software I was not saying that it is actualy illegal. I was pointing out that Sony should do what MS does and let people play older games they already own on disc. The Xbox 360 backwards compatibility list isn't complete either, but it's better than asking people to re-purchase the games they have on disc just to play on their new system. Sony is obviously sitting on backwards compatibility to sell more digital "Classics". MS sells original Xbox games on XBLA but all those games can still play from their original disc too.

If I had my way ALL gaming systems would play ALL previous gen titles. I don't care how much it would add to the price of a system. The games of old should be able to be played on future systems. I just fundimentaly belief that backwrds compatibility is very important so it sadens me to find out that Sony has software to allow people to play 90% of PS2 games on the PS3.
