Yes because the core franchises like Mario etc are more challenging (not because the game cheats like on many other games)/smarter than most games .

(Multiplayer has nothing to do with the game being a challenge or not. I never died in Call of Duty Modern Warfare but I constantly die in Super Mario games. And just because most other games give you an online community where its easy to find challenging players for competitive gameplay doesnt make the game a challenge itself. I can always find a person who is better anything even in farting or spitting or whatever.)

Mario is a hardcore title (because it was back in the 80s and its not plausible to change that when the games dont change much)

Call of Duty is a mainstream title. It has a multiplayer component that allows for challenging matches but here the challenge comes from other people not from the game itself. I can alwas try to get more points or have a better speedrun than another person in Mario games))

They play "core" games so...yes. Obviously, in fact.

That's too vague a question no? I mean over 90 million wiis out there....there's no real way of checking how many of the owners are casuals.

Not with complete accuracy, no, but a safe estimate would be in the 95-99% range. After all, Call of Duty sold about a million copies.

Edit:

Core:  Often buying Call of Duty and a sports game along with a couple others.

Hardcore:  buys more than 6 games a year.  Will often buy more fringe games with cult followings.

Casual: buys one or two titles a year.  CoD/Sports game/ Motion gaming/ music gaming.  What ever is popular at the time

Nintendo gamers are really a different breed.  Not a core in the overall gaming sense but there is definetly the core nintendo gamer who is reliable to pick up Mario, Zelda, Smash, MK, Metroid, ect.

Here's how I see it:-

Casual - Plays every so often. Interested in games which are easy to pick up and play. Think mobile and party games that can be enjoyed with family and friends.

Core - Plays more (advanced) games. The; Tomb Raiders, Halo's, Call of Duty's, Assassins Creed's, Zelda's etc.

Hardcore - People who spend hours upon hours on a particular game. Think World of Warcraft or Call of Duty players who rack up days/weeks of play time.

a gamer is a gamer, a casual is a casual but a gamer can be a casual as a casual can be gamer that casually plays games.

I am a nintendo casual gamer. I like my games but only play them casually

For the most part yes.

What kind of true RPG fan would ignore XenoBlade Chronicles? What kind of true FPS fan would ignore Metroid Prime? What kind of Action/Adventure fan would ignore Zelda? Nintendo has some of the best games out there, and only the really hardcore gamers own a Wii (maybe just as a secondary console) to play the few, but excellent Nintendo exclusives.

However the people who only have a Nintendo platform, I don't consider them core gamers. You can't ignore all the multiplatform and exclusive games available on the PS3/360. You need at least 1 HD system.

Does the PC count?

(Also WiiU is HD but I know what you mean.)

Well yea, it does, PC is capable of graphics higher then PS3/360, a lot of 360 console exclusives are available on PC, and PC has it's own selection of quality exclusives (Starcraft 2, The Witcher 1, Civilization V, etc). PC is an HD system (unless you have a PC like mine which struggles with Halo 1).

Wii U just came out, so it doesn't count (what did the core gamers play from 2006-2012, other then Wii?)

Niche DS RPGs, I suppose. But as I said, I know what you meant. I felt you could've used a qualifier that automatically precluded Wii U, though.

The ones on vgchartz seem to be more businessmen than gamers

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Considering they are fans of the gaming company that is actually a gaming company and a multimedia mega corporation, I'd say yes :P
