PlayStation 4 pre-orders are "performing very well", a spokesperson for GAME has revealed, telling VideoGamer.com that the retailer is "certain" that the arrival of the console will revive the UK's flagging retail market.

"Just like the rest of the gaming community, we were glued to the coverage of the Sony announcement," GAME's category director Charlotte Knight said in a Q&A with VideoGamer.com.

"We moved really quickly to get our PlayStation 4 pre-orders up and live and we saw a huge amount of excitement right from the word 'go'," she said, adding: "Our PlayStation 4 pre-orders are performing very well so far".

As well as seeing "incredible excitement and interest" from consumers, the retailer welcomes Sony's decision to continue supporting disc-based games and pre-owned titles with PlayStation 4.

"We think that's what the gaming community of the UK wants and so that's what we support," Knight continued, before adding that the arrival of the console will "boost retail sales".

"Historically, the videogames industry has always been cyclical in line with the release of new hardware," Knight continued.

"Whilst that might change as the gaming landscape evolves, right now we can be certain that the next generation of consoles will boost retail sales. On top of that, it will mobilise developers to keep pushing the boundaries of gaming - and that's great for both gamers and for the industry as a whole."

And the retailer believes that interest in the console will continue to grow as more details about the product are revealed.

"Despite not actually seeing the device, the impressive hardware specs and incredible-looking games were more than enough to convince fans to secure their console and avoid disappointment when it launches," Knight added.

"There's been incredible excitement and interest and we expect to see that build as more details are announced."

PlayStation 4 is set to launch during holiday 2013, with the hardware expected to be shown in June

how can you pre-order something that has no price tag :O

I went into my local store and they said I was the first person to pre-order it in the region on Saturday. A few had registered interest in it, but I was the first to put money down.

Sounds like PR Bull, I must say. Remember those 500k preorders for WiiU at Gamestop?

Obviously I'd like it to do well, but...this really means nothing (but most people would have known this anyway).

Also GAME are saying it will cost £270 for the PS4, if you were interested.

it baffles me. It would be hilarious to see their reactions, if sony announced the ps4 would retail $1000. Unlikely, but funny.

Why are people pre-ordering from a soon to be dead company?

Can you pre-order at that price? And do they have a pre-order price guarantee? :)

No price promise I'm aware of, but you can pre-order it with that being the given price (with a £20 deposit)

Alternatively, you can register your interest in order to receive alerts, like price, release etc. I imagine this is more what they are referring to
