Talking specifically about PS4/Xbox8 here. A lot of the graphical improvements are going to be stuff like higher resolutions, high-res textures, better AA, better particle effects etc. right? The kind of stuff that can be mind-blowing in person, but harder to make out on super compressed internet videos or SD tv ads. E.g. Seeing Metro gameplay on youtube, even in HD, doesn't compare to the visual spectacle it is on my PC in person. Going from last gen to current in advertising faced a similar issue (HD being a major selling point but for the most part was advertised on SD platforms), but you could still notice a massive improvement in the geometrical detail/amount of polys... an advancement that won't be as notable in this transition. 

Am I alone in noticing this or is it a legit issue?

Anyway, you're right Andre, I feel it's the same with advertising HD content in general (especially Blu-Ray), but many people are switching to HD channel packs on satellite TV and internet bandwidth is always increasing, so advertisements of next-gen games should be more impressive. Textures, effects and lighting should look noticeably better anyway.

Easy enough for PS4: Flower 2 ads all day, everyday.

I wish that games would have been marketed on their gameplay this gen. I think it would be very easy to market games, if you actually showed a 30 to 60 sec of gameplay. So I see no reason why their should be any issue next gen. Just let the actual games do the talking. No live action, no CGI, no in game cutscece, just actual in game footage.
