It's because of smartphones, gaming is not losing people who want to play, they just don't really want to pay for it.
Mr Khan said: The better question: is the market in decline because Nintendo's in decline? 7th-gen growth is largely due to Wii/DS, after all. If Nintendo's dropped the ball such that they're not doing the heavy lifting anymore, how will the 8th gen stack up? Could be the first instance of gen-over-gen decline in the history of home console gaming. |
don't forget about the market crash back in the 80's.
OT: it's the market and Nintendo went next gen. to soon. by my calculations, next gen isn't supose to star for 2 yr.'s, which is one reason the market is in decline. it's really phasing out 7th gen. consoles, and the process isn't finished yet as far as i can tell.
Nintendo rushed the 8th gen., and now they are suffering the decline of the 7th gen. market.

Yeah... that's more or less the answer. "Yes".
They both are... because Nintendo was such a huge part of the market.
Nintendo sorta alienated their new console base with the Wii U, or looks that way in anycase. I doubt they'll end up on the Ps4 or 720 unless one of them makes a surprising casual focus like the Wii was.

I don't see them doing all the lifting. 6th gen they dropped the ball and PS2 did a pretty amazing "heavy-lifting" job. If the grow ends now, it will be just because the console market is done, and I think its too soon to take conclusions now.
It's soon to see a decline in consoles, the gen started at 2 months and only one competitor is out. PS4 or 720 could have monster sales and everything would be all right. And people are jumping too soon in the "Wii U doomed" trend. PS3 and Genesis had rough starts and did pretty well. Wii U is having problems competing with PS360 because of the price of the HD twins and the large game library. When the sucessors release, they will become old stuff and Wii U won't. And if we see a decline, it will be on portables, since mobile is killing them. So, if portables still are able to survive, consoles are completely safe.

Yeah, the Wii U is currently irrelevant since most people who bought the Wii never were commited to the system in the first place and don't give a fuck about its successor. I mean, there is no way in hell that a lacking software library could possibly have anything to do with the Wii U's current sales numbers.
Its a little of both. Nintendo hasn't marketed the Wii U to casuals in a convincing manner. Perhaps its because they all have IPads already. The majority of Wii U gamers right now (I presume from sites, stores and more) are children and hardcore Nintendo fans. In other words Nintendo is back to GC status.
It's obviously both, but I'd expect to see similar drops for the other consoles come next year, or even this one, when their 8th gen consoles also release.
I don't see anything really taking off for a while now.
