While I still prefer traditional turn-based RPGs, I have nothing against RPGs with different styles, either. FF XIII was fine to me, and that's coming from someone who ranks FF XI and Suikoden 2 as two of my favorite games ever.

If there is anything that annoys me about the RPG genre, it's that there is so much complaining. If a RPG follows the traditional formula, then it's stale, if it tries something new, then OMG, it's time to protest. I saw the same thing with Suikoden 3, which I absolutely loved. I don't care if it's traditional, I don't care if it's different, I only care if it's GOOD.

I also have no problem with cut-scenes and extended stories. That's part of what I like about RPGs. I grew up with reading as my primary hobby, especially fantasy and science fiction novels, so I love that stuff.

Active battle systems aren't my favorite thing in the world, but those have been around in RPGs forever. I don't begrudge them their existence.

They made Chaos Rings which has a 92% on metacritic.. Just because some people don't want an iOS device doesn't mean SE didn't make triple A JRPGS

Ninokuni still has an action battle system. Or rather action and command-based. Same goes for FF XIII though...

FF devs/producers say a lot of crap but you shouldn't generalize; SE still makes different types of games. Bravely Default recently came out, it's a traditional RPG, and it got very good reception. They just need to localize it already.

The action element of the combat system in FF XIII isn't to blame be se. It's the fact that they made it so it stripped you of nearly 2 third of the management decisions that people are mostly disappointed in. A game series where you could step back and look at the situation, and adjust on the fly based on the outcome of the last few attacks, became a button masher where reflexes are more important than anything. I'm generalizing, but that's what most of the feel is like now.

The core has changed greatly, and people aren't happy with it for good reason. A Final Fantasy game isn't a Final Fantasy game anymore, if you see what I mean.

Ni No Kuni is 87, and is therfore a AA game. Nothing wrong with that, I hear great things about it.

Hold up.  Did you just say that Halo 4 is a AA game?  Holy cats ..

No. SE is right. In order for the JRPG to remain relevant it must advance. The "How to create a JRPG: 90's Edition" needs to be shelved. There is so much more interactivity JRPG's can bring to the player thats its unbelievable it hasn't happened yet.

...looks a sales of both xeno and ni no kuni. yeah, no. you guys may like them and all, but no. just no.

Ni No is too niche its style. I think if Xeno was on a HD console it would have sold good numbers.

This is about the metascore?

Ni No Kuni only got 16 reviews so far. How's that compare with a game with more than 50 reviews?

Triple A has nothing to do with metacritic score but with budget.

I think persona 3 is the best jrpg in last 10 years. But it is not AAA, that is a fact. Even if it's the best game of all time it is not AAA.

Also, the sales is likely the perspectivefrom SE. in which case they aren't far off, xenoblade didn't even crack a million. This game sold .2 million in Japan and won't likely crack a million either despite getting spectacular reviews, and IMO looks spectacular.

What traditional JRPGs have cracked a million recently?

Pokemon, DQ9 and um...

Persona 4 (golden), and xenoblade already proved SE wrong.
