Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo to Consolidate Hardware Development

Can someone please explain to me everyone on here is absolutely convinced that the Wii U is selling horribly. It may not quite have been up to Nintendo's expectations so far, but nearly 2.5 million sold in two months is far from terrible. Ninty's goal was 5.5 mil by April, and while that seems unlikely now, it's not even unattainable. It seems like everyone on here is acting like the WiiU's the biggest bomb since the Virtual Boy, but as far as I can tell, this is far from the truth.

I'm not a fanboy, and if someone can come up with a logical reason why the WiiU's sales are viewed so negatively I'll certainly listen.

Okay, then. Thanks for welcoming me :). I've actually been frequenting this site for almost a year, but rarely ventured on to the forums. But today I finally decided to say something. I'd still like an answer to my question, though.

For me personally, the total numbers sold are ok, but GBA and Gamecube all had decent launches. It's how the console fares post launch that determines its fate. If you draw a line between Japan launch to now, you will see why some of us are not convinced Wii U can stay around its initial % of Wii sales. Plummer is a good word in the mushroom kingdom, but plummeting...not.

Notice how first year sales of last 3 consoles and Wii Us aren't as drastically different as the eventual lifetime sales.  So Launch is not a good indication of long term success.

This chart shows lifetime unit sales of Nintendo’s last three home consoles and illustrates nicely that a new cycle is about to start.

3DS was scary slow for a while until the combination of price cut, XL model, and frankly more games helped relaunch 3DS as the fastest Nintendo console ever. We need some kind of push on the Wii U front. Contrary to some of the folks here, I prefer to see PS4 and Xbox720 kick the shit out of Wii U in terms of raw power. That just means those two hardware will be in another stratosphere price wise. The recent rumors that the HD twins might ease up on horsepower and utilize more off the shelf parts makes me a little nervous about Wii U's ability to price drop and find distinction...instead of price drop then ind extinction.

Nintendo 3DS Becomes Fastest Selling Console Ever in Japan

After a troubled launch, the Nintendo 3DS has staged an amazing comeback to become Japan’s fastest-selling games console ever. Reports of this little console’s death are greatly exaggerated.

This is not a company that is short on funds, so I can't see the rush to announce something like this pre-earnings announcement. Maybe they will jam some charges into this quarter which is likely to disappoint when fiscal '13 gets revised lower on unit sales.

I think they want to appease investors as the stock has dropped by more than 15% in value since the Wii U release. In the end, I still believe Nintendo will profitable though don't you think? A 550 million loss to maybe 50 million and above profit is quite a turn of event.

Up 2% in JP so not negatively perceived at all!

Yes, but it's been one month and one week since the Japan launch. That's a ridiculously small sample size. Way to small to take anything meaningful from, especially when half of that time was the middle of the holiday season. Of course sales are going to drop dramatically after Christmas. Not one sane person didn't expect them too. In your original post, you questioned whether this may be a knee-jerk reaction to WiiU sales, implying that they've been disastrous. You just admitted that they haven't. The amount of pretty unbased disregard of the WiiU's sales borders on sensationalism.

Edit: Since it doesn't seem to be working, how do you reply directly to someone else's comment?

The Tingle Tuner IS the greatest thing ever. You can skip Dragon Roost Cavern with it.

That is pretty awesome actually.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Use Quote.

Not sure how closely ypu follow Nintendo as a company.  But trust me, as someone who has hundreds of thousands invested in Nintendo, I am the last person that is "attacking" them.  But you do have to take the company's 5.5 million shipped projection in mind, how at this pace, Wii U will under shoot by miles.

By knee jerk reaction I meant the timing of such disclosure.  We all knew they were building a brand new R& D facility and that numerous restructuring efforts were planned and announced in the past.
