Forums - General Discussion - Radio is still important today?

I still listen a lot to the radio. Although, some of the stations I listen to are streamed from the internet.

But, yeah, radio is awesome.

aahh the good old radio, you think you won't but it comes to us all,you will put on those comfy slippers, puff another cushion on the chair and listen to the old radio, mainly talky stuff too

the radio like scorpions, cockroaches and rats will still be here when the big bomb goes Kappow!

Yeah, sometimes it's just nice to listen to music while doing stuff like revisioning for exams or even gaming. The internet has only opened it up further, you can stream any radio stations from anywhere in the world now and it's pretty awesome. You can always find great content on the radio if you know where to look

Radio has the advantage over television in that it does not need to engage the eyes AND ears at the same time, therefore it can be used in a wide variety of areas where eyes are busy (driving, work etc.)

I still think that eventually the internet will consume radio like it does television, in the form of streaming radio, but it would depend on how wide of a distribution band could be achieved in remote, portable areas (remember that the original intention of the internet is supposed to be to maintain some degree of communication in the event of disasters).

regarding you first sentence, I'm not sure I would include driving, in terms of engaging the eyes and ears at the same time

I mean some people actually text while they are driving, LOL

well...I guess I shouldn't laugh at that, because that's pretty dangerous....

I'm talking about the initial aim of the internet, what it's design is based on. Is it like that at the moment? Sort of, but not to a reliable level, hence the "eventually". Also, I'm talking about the transport method (possible transmission via WiMax or similar technology on an IP transport protocol). 4G is already the first step towards integrating the mobile phone network more seamlessly with computer networks via packet based transmission. Broadcasting methods such as television and radio will ultimately follow.

Besides: Just because a radio station is on backup power doesn't mean a WiMax tower cannot be.

Actually the packet data is used on 2G networks aswell. What newer generations improve upon, is speed and lag. Where 3G networks have speed up to around 40Mbps and lag below 200ms, and 4G networks currently operate at speeds max twice of 3G and max 50ms lag.

Mobile network tower being on backup power usually means someone would need to start the generator (same problem with FM amplifiers, but they have much better coverage).

Using a mobile phone network would be good idea (as smartphones have IP-based radio built in, though the cheaper ones have FM), but in the case of a disaster, the traffic would kill the network, and in some cases it might be even made available only to emergency calls and military use.

Sure, specially when you're in a traffic jam. The radio stations in my country are similar to those in GTA 4. You can't imagine the funny crap people talk on the radio.

I agree with your first sentence.

I disagree with your second line.

I mean how is the internet suppose to work if a Category 4 hurricane knocks down all the power lines.  But some radio stations have backup generators, and if you have a battery operated or hand-cranked operated radio, at least you have something.....

Yes, that's true...

Last i heard was that the Radio Star was killed by Video

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

I listen to the radio all the time. It's how I follow sports and other news.

I never watch TV. I don't even pay for it.

Nobody gets me. "Radio" is a movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. He went full retard and critics hated it!

I loved that movie.
