Would you release a new PS or Xbox in 2013?

Yes it's time for a new PS. 84 35.00%

Yes it's time for a new Xbox. 74 30.83%

Nope, I would stick to the PS3 10 year plan. 65 27.08%

Nope, I would wait until ... 17 7.08%

i see your point but the industry is read for new consoles. i think dev's, Sony, and MS should take 2 more yr.'s and make profit off consoles they've broken to thier core (360 mainly/PS3 still some jucie left in it although most dev.'s say otherwise but i know the reason for that. it's because they don't have the tech to get that last bit out. wow this could have been a sentence) but the market for consoles are in decline, although some publishers are making record profits, while others like THQ are selling assets cause of bankruptcy and failure to make profit due to rising development cost.

the new consoles will likely lower dev. cost because from the rumors we've been getting, it seems that way, so there's your answer.

simpler consoles to lower dev. cost. hopefully. all speculation of course.

wow, ok, most people here seem to think it's time for both a new PS and Xbox, but who where those people a year ago at the time of the rumors of Wii U that claimed they were happy with their current gen and consoles for at least another few years?

Apparently if the rumors are to be believed they are going to get their wish. In a few months it will be two years since the Wii U was announced, and that would mean that a late fall launch would be about two and a half years, and a late spring launch next year will actually be three solid years. So did you actually have any kind of point with this comment, or are you just padding the thread.

Seriously, what is the point of them brining out new consoles at this point, when considering that PS3 and Xbox 360 seem to be in the prime of their lives?

They are absolutely not in the prime of their lives.  Check this out from TheSource.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=152463

Here is what I said later in the thread.  The short answer is that gamers in 2012 are now buying less games per year than they were when the consoles launched.  They both peaked in 2008.  Interested is waining.  It is time to move on.

Here is the separated analysis everyone was asking for.  I copy and pasted the exact numbers from the charts, so you will notice 2005 looks a little different because of the rounding TheSource did.

LTD Hardware Yearly Software Game Purchase Rate
Year X360 PS3 X360 PS3 X360 PS3
2005 1,178,267 0 2,849,162 0 2.42 ---
2006 7,979,799 1,252,040 25,207,607 2,033,730 3.16 1.62
2007 15,859,351 9,174,095 61,447,450 37,173,227 3.87 4.05

2008

26,772,474 19,378,853 108,909,458 88,788,171 4.07 4.58
2009 36,932,992 32,376,827 107,118,181 96,837,921 2.90 2.99
2010 49,961,079 46,388,642 133,691,251 131,311,968 2.68 2.83
2011 63,769,444 60,507,735 154,713,292 148,409,212 2.43 2.45
2012 74,249,953 72,396,583 143,023,845 135,880,467 1.93 1.88

I guess I will throw in a little of my own analysis.

If you were to graph the game purchase rate against time, it would make a rough bell curve with both
consoles peaking in 2008.  It is pretty amazing how far both consoles dropped in 2009, with both falling
more than one game in purchase rate.  It was more slow decline in 2010 and 2011, but 2012 brought
another small cliff.  Both fell another half game in 2012.  The Xbox360 has now dropped below its launch
point.  The PS3 has not yet gone that low, but it is close.  I would not be surprised by another 0.5 drop in
purchase rate for 2013.  That would put both consoles well below their rate at launch.  Clearly, that would
be the time for new consoles.

I personaly never claimed that. But you have to admit that the people with PS360s weren't looking forward to a Wii U only slightly more powerfull than the PS360 they already have. I'll be getting a Wii U as soon as a real Mario, Zelda or Metroid hits because I always buy Nintendo consoles for my favorite Nintendo games. But I'm sure you can see that people are excited about the next Playstation and Xbox because they will be huge advancements compared to what we have now. Halo 5 is going to be spectacular.

Market fatigue. By the end of console generations, people buy less games; thus, the arrival of new consoles re-ignites the gaming industry and raises interest of future games.

Will need to see what the new consoles do.  Are we at a place where merely a new console with better graphics alone, is going to be enough to revitalize?  Fatigue could be completely over the videogame industry itself.

A few things.

Most games are coming out first half of this year. There are only a few given games that are coming this holiday such as a new Call of Duty and Battlefield 4.

Sony and M$ haven't announced anything officially.

If they do release new consoles, then that is 11 months away minimum.

Nope no padding, I really didn't expect these responses lol. I really thought people were more than happy with their PS360s and even happier to just buy games instead of expensive consoles. But I agree, it will soon be 'a few years' more since people have had their PS360s, so maybe while it's not yet a full 10 year plan, it's been a good number of years.

Ok you lost me at the bold. I thougt that new hardware meant new R&D and higher development cost simply to learn the new hardware. So how can it be cheeper for develpers to work with a new console which they don't know, as oppsed to a current console that they have made games for before?

I would rather have Microsoft and Sony wait till march/ april of 2014 with their new console offerings.
