Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony files patent for new tech to stop second hand games

let's remember that it can be used to make developers make money with used games, because if you buy a used game, you also need to pay a certain value to allow you to play this game. althoough the money spent buying the used game won't become profit to developer, the tax paid to make the game yours, making the game to be linked to your psn, goes to devs.

dont buy used games anyway

its not about if you buy used games or not, it's about the principle. you BUY a game it becomes YOURS. you have the right to sell it as you like

legally you aren't buying the game, only the license to play the game.  not really different i suppose then why you can't buy a single windows OS disc and install it on as many computers as you want ... because you bought a license and that license is for a specified (limited) number of devices.

...but as a business practise this probably has a more negative impacts then benifits.  i doubt it will in actually get used game buyers to buy new software.  ..more likely they'll just buy wii U's or xbox's instead.

If they do this then 2-3 years after next gen ends the options to play more PS4 games would be either piracy or buy a bunch of PS4s, one for each game. Nice.

Well....if Sony decides to kill second hand gaming outright, which could happen next gen except Nintendo allows it still and Microsoft is up in the air. Maybe PSN will become more like Steam with more flexible pricing. These past 2 years with PS Plus have really changed what PSN is able to offer already, the Vita even more so. I'm actually thinking about going all digital soon.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

ok but when i pay for a game i have the right to use it, if for some reason i lost my psn account along with my console i cant even play it even though i bought it. and dont tell me the chances of that happening are slim because it happened to me. and lets say i want to play it at a friends house, suddenly i cant?

Well, if that happens i'll probably not buy a Sony console ever again. I play a lot of games therefore i don't always get the ones i'm interested in while they are still in print. Hell, i'll still buy SNES and PS1 games today.

Consoles aren't like PC where i can be fairly certain the architecture to get old school games will always be around.

Besides, economic theory shows second hand sales HELP new sales.  As people who buy the games know they can resell them and recoup a part of their initial investment.

I wonder if this is something Sony has thought off, or if EA/Activision/Ubisoft are pushing for this. Anyway I won't buy a console without second hand games unless they make games cheaper to begin with.

the 2nd hand market is bullshit. narks me how a 2nd hand game is just a few pounds cheaper than a brand new game. You go into game shops and you here the workers all the time saying well we have it preowned for this much here. Me is like i want a new one.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

The patent mentions "Temporary uses" quite often. Curious to know what this entails.

If you lose your game disc or scratch it, you are fucked even more. When you buy a game you have the right to consume its content. The disc is the medium used to deliver the content to you, and you can do all you want to the disc, but the content was sold to you only.
