i have the feeling pikachu is as popular as mario but sonic? i think many don't even know who sonic is, at least of those people i know.

Id say its arguable that Pikachu is on par with Mario due to things outside of the videogames. Possibly bigger.

Pikachu and Mario are pretty much beyond everything else in gaming.

i prefer Sonic to Pikachu. Although, Pokemon did make a good TV series and movies (i never played the games!)

Pikachu, definitely. It's about which one the general public are more likely to recognize, and from my experience Pikachu is more well known.

I don't know. Games like assassin's creed and call of duty are certainly much more popular than sonic ever was, but I would venture to guess most players don't really know the characters. Assassin's creed has an advantage because there aren't too many assassin games out there while there are a ton of military shooters. But I've played assassin's creed I and II and if you show me a picture of ezio I wouldn't be able to guess if he was ezio, or altair from the first assassin's creed. He simply isn't that good of a mascot.

The difference between Pikachu and Jesus is smaller than the difference between Pikachu and Sonic.
Sonic is a cool guy, but hasn't had a good game in ages.
