I don't think that he is necessarily right, but this console is a little perplexing. I got to spend a little bit of time with a Wii U this holiday at my local Best Buy, There were plenty of consoles left(both styles), which I was really surprised at. Generally, regardless of the manufacturer all consoles are sold out. This was before Christmas too. I couldn't believe it. Not too many people were checking it out, so I did.
Unfortunately, someone had broken one of the analog sticks and your player would constantly go left. But, I brushed this aside, understanding that some punk kid probably smashed it. I was a little surprised, because Nintendo is known for making very durable controllers, but who knows. The graphics looked wonderful on the Rayman Origins game. I got a little excited about the console for the first time. It really looked great!
So, having money in my pocket I started checking out the games that it offered. Wow, what a disappointment. Most of the games, I already owned. I think that I saw Zombi U, and the new Mario were the only titles I would possibly be interested in. And, I'm pretty bored of Mario. The only time I really enjoy it is when I play with my kids. Don't get me wrong, I know that launch line-ups are usually pretty slim, and sometimes downright awful. But most of the games were already on other consoles.
I decided not to pick it up. I almost bought it for my son, but I wasn't sure. I knew he would probably want one, and they would all be sold out the day after Christmas. Whatever. If he really wanted one, we could pre-order one for the next shipment(hopefully). I ended up buying my son a $250 Visa gift card. I would throw in the extra cash for the premium one, if he wanted it.The day after Christmas comes, and we go to Best Buy. My son was roaring to spend his gift card, and we walked right up to the Wii U display. I was absolutely shocked that there were plenty of Wii U's left on display. When I mean plenty, about 30 or so were on the floor for purchase. The place was super busy, and no one was looking at the Wii U. I was curious to see what my son thought about Nintendo's newest console. Well, he ended up playing with it for about 2 minutes, and then left to check out the newest i-touch.
The fact is, I wasn't that shocked. I've been a gaming nerd for a long time. As always, I was very excited/curious about this new console. Aside from the graphics, which again looked wonderful, I wasn't very impressed. I was a little dumbfounded. I was the guy that stood in line all night to purchase a Wii. So why did I feel this way? The answer is simple: the Wii U doesn't really offer anything that I want. I'm not saying that it won't in the future, but for now I'll just stick to my Wii, 360, and PS3.
All of that was to say that although I don't completely agree with the author of the review, I can understand where he is coming from. I truly hope that Nintendo ups their game, or they will have a very tough generation.
