Forums - Gaming Discussion - Mario is half a billion!!

Can i also point out that COD,GTA and the Sims are sold on multiple platforms, not just the one platform like Mario. So that makes the feat all the more spectacular.

Well, i doubt Super Mario could sell additional 52 million copies under a year...and after the PS2 vs DS fiasco, i don't take VGC sales articles seriously.

If the Wiki numbers are from over a year ago, that means they don't include Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros U and Mario Tennis Open. That's like over 21 million right there. The Wii and DS Mario's are selling very good still, all combined they'll likely reach a similar number. Don't know if the numbers include Mario & Sonic, they'll add some millions too.

I think you'd be surprised if someone would do the math and add everything together from since before last holiday season.

...and with only like 30+ games in 25 years across 11 systems !!!

You really like to harp on this, as shown in follow up replies, but the truth is that you can take Mario's numbers from this Gen alone and it still blows almost everything else out of the water.  In addition to that, it's longevity is amazing, it's not the only franchise that existd 25 years ago, but how many of it's contemporaries have put up anywhere near those numbers?

I will try to the best of my abilities to downplay this feat as good as i can.

Mario's only strength (sales wise) lies in 2D platformers, without them (and heavy bundling and milking from Nintendo) the series aren't as impressive, especially compared to COD, GTA or Sims whom managed to sell almost as half as Mario did in 3 times smaller timespan and 10 times less amount of games

I'll give you GTA. That's a very good franchise sales-wise. CoD has done it across many platforms with yearly iterations while Mario has one platform per game with usually one game per generation for a particular branch. Also, CoD needs to sell four times as much still if it were to match Mario. Let's see how long that'll take (not gonna happen). And the Sims? Really, there's almost as much Sims games by now than Mario games.

Sims are also on a platform with a much larger install base then Mario, which is a point you keep brining up (install base).  Someone put together a list of best selling franchises.  Final Fantasy might be the fairest comparison.  I'ld check do it but I'm pretty lazy.
