Forums - Gaming Discussion - Me vs Mom: School shooting influenced by gaming

If it wasn't games, it'd be rock music.
Ultimately they want to blame everyone instead of looking in the mirror and seeing the actual culprit. They should be asking why nobody noticed such an unstable guy for so long rather then saying something made him do it.

Parents who think that videogames will make their kids (or -can make someone-) violent are bad parents (generally, nothing to do with your mom i bet she's cool) if you where a good parent and raised your son correctly, talking and teaching him your morals and manners (because your are not a murderer right?) then he would know, and you should trust in what you teached him - Now people who worry about this matter are those who deep inside know they haven't done their work, they fear because deep iside they know they didn't sat with their sons to talk about murder, sex, beliefs, prostitution, drugs, war, etc-etc... that kind of people who expect the government to take care of their kids, or try to keep them busy for most part of the day, those who expect the tv to raise their kids but get mad when it doesn't show the religion they want, the music they want, even the clothes they want pfff, i wish i was more proficient in the english language so i could express all my felings... this topic in particular makes me sick, we need to understand that these guys are not 18 year olds whose but just tickled and they decided to kill someone, this is something a lot more deeper that has to do with how they've lived so far, this ''mental condition'' starts when you are a kid and develops from there if you (and your surroundings) feed it and it certainly has nothing to do with tapping buttons while in front of a screen.

Do parents fear for what their kids play?

Your mom is wrong.only crazy people go on shooting rampages.
Dont blame video games.tell her if video games was the case then there would be a shooting once a week.

Personally, I don't think excessive videogame playing (in particular graphically violent games) are entirely harmless, especially for young kids, but I think calling them a major influence on violent acts is going way too far ...

With the details I have heard of a handful of crazy gun-men I have come to the conclusion that it is a combination of rare factors that creates a ticking time-bomb. You take someone with a genetic pre-disposition to mental health issues which lead to violent outbursts, you combine that with a odd and/or abusive upbringing, and you add to that a society which is (in some ways) hostile towards them and things go badly. Anders Breivik is a good example of this ... While I have no evidence of any genetic pre-disposition to violence, before he was born his mother decided that he was a violent child and was distant, hostile and abusive towards him from day one; and as an adult he lives in a society that doesn't even tolerate moderate fact-based criticism of multi-culturalism, so he wasn't re-assured for having concerns he was alienated because he dared speak them.

Ignorance is a terrible thing. Ive seen that video as well as many others like it and I find it hilarious that she scoffs at Geoff when he asks if she has played the game. She is openly admitting that she has no idea what she is talking about and thinks that somehow that lends her credibility. I've seen countless acts of violence in video games in the last year alone but that doesn't mean it doesn't sicken me when something happens in real life and I find the thought of taking someones life to be horrible. The vilification of Video Games is just a convenient scape goat to skirt by real world problems.

I have no problem with that report by Fox News and I'll tell you why. The anchor moderating doesn't make any claims. She says she watched some video about the game, didn't see anything graphic and asked general questions of the pundits about video games. The woman making all the claims isn't a Fox News employee and her views were countered by Geoff Keighley who does a very good job of setting the record straight. Then after the "experts" part of the report she talks in studio and says several times that you have to read the rating on the box. But at that point it wasn't a report. It was a discussion between parents. They agreed that there shouldn't be censorship but are concerned about what video games to give to their kids.

You have to look at this from the parents perspective. They think of video games as toys for kids. They don't want their 8 year old to play with a game with sex and violence. They understand that video games have ratings and some are for adults, but they still think of them as toys.

That Fox News report gets a lot of hate, but the truth is that Fox News didn't say anything negative about video games. Both sides were represented and the video game expert wiped the floor with the other.

I think too many people have too thin of skin when it comes to the topic of video games.

At this point in time, that point of view doesn't pass the mustard. This isn't the 80s and 90s. People thinking video games are toys is a piss poor excuse. The majority of gamers are adults. Heck the kids that were around during the big video game violence controversy of the early 90s are in their 30s.

Ask your mother, point blank, if she thinks that you are homicidal. If she says no, tell her that her theory is obviously flawed. Logical Trap, I choose you. You play violent video-games but you're not homicidal, therefore violent video-games do not make a person into a serial killer.

Give her condescending smile and say, "ah, now we're getting somewhere." Ask her if she thinks Jack the Ripper played violent video-games. Ask her if she thinks Charles Manson, Richard Berkowitz, or H. H. Holmes were knocking people off after playing Mass Effect. Ask her if, perhaps, psychopaths might have other factors in common--such as, for instance, being psychopaths.

Ask her how video-games are making our society more violent when violent crime per capita has actually gone down since the rise of video-games. http://kotaku.com/5814601/violent-video-games-contribute-to-dropping-crime-rate-study-suggests

Here's something to take your your mom: violent crimes have actually been falling as video games have become more violent and mainstream:
