Forums - Sony Discussion - How has Sony not fixed marketing yet?

Sony have been advertising in the UK absolutely tonnes this holiday.

Saying that, 90% of it is the Vita advert and about 10% is the family-PS3 advert. Haven't seen anything for Wonderbook yet, although I did see an advert for it in a bus stop yesterday.

Nintendo are ramping up their advertising too, though. I've seen the Professor Layton/3DS advert in pretty much every ad break while watching TV today. And a few Wii-U ads scattered in there too.

And are the ads any good???? Or at least decent????? Sony has a record of bad advertising.

Finally, do you think ads have helped to move hardware/software in the UK?????

No they havent, just Uncharted 3 and the Vita. The problem is their budget is primarily used to make games and everything else comes second. With Microsoft its the opposite, marketing > games.

Yes there has.

You dont live where I live. I notice you only replied to my post and not everyone else saying the same as me.

I'm flattered.

Playstation products have seen unprecedented advertsising this holidays in the UK, seriously huge amounts.  Far more than Ninty and MS combined.  Seen a little bit of Ninty and virtually none from MS.

I doubt that. Im willing to bet Sonys marketing budget isnt a quarter of Microsofts. Microsofts budget to advertise Windows 8 alone is crazy.

Im sorry, wtf are you talking about.    What does that have to do with gaming.  We are talking about gaming here, clearly.

Go ask the other UK users in here if Im right.

Im talking about the  willingness for Microsoft to put out a budget multiples of what Sony provides in the west. The commercials might be strong in the UK but in the US Microsoft commercials can be seen 6 out of 10 times because they make not only the exclusive commercials but the multiplats as well.

i wouldn't know about TV ads since i don't watch TV anymore

Just watched the NFL on CBS and FOX for the 1 o'clock games, Sony finally advertising Playstation Allstar battle royale, looks good.

I don't think advertising is problem, I think it's the game itself. The games you mentioned to me sound/look boring. More specifically, the premise of the games don't interest me. Gameplay, graphics...these things are important, but so is the theme. If someone said to me "In this game, you get to play as Batman in an open-world style where every villian from his history is trying to escape from Arkam Asylum. Use his gadgets and skills and stop them!" Sold! Infamous...whatever it is... not so much.

However, I find it interesting that you say they are "deserving" of more sales. We could play a game and you could change my mind on those undersold franchises. I am Sony's ideal potential customer. I like most types of games. I have low brand loyalty. I don't own a PS3(yet) mostly because it was cheaper early on to buy both a wii and an XBox than 1 PS3. I'm a former happy PS2 gamer. I've played and enjoyed GoW, and Uncharted sounds interesting. Can you describe Infamous or Resistence in one or two sentences that make it sound awesome? I would describe GoW as "Play as Kratos, a warrior from ancienct Greece who must battle the God of War using his unique chained blades. Find treasure and upgrade your powers as you battle through a beautifully created world inspired by greek mythology in an incredible mix of classic action and adventure". Can you make those games sound good? If so I might go out and buy that nice-looking new white PS3 and some games!

Well I don't think it's about 1 or 2 sentences to sell the game.  I think it's about getting people interested enough to check out a developer walkthrough or any gameplay video for that matter, but I'll play your game.

Infamous:  "Play as Cole Mcgrath, an electrically superpowered hero...or villain depending on YOUR choices.  Upgrade your new powers and fight gangs led by other superpowered beings in the open world of Empire City.

I like Resistance 3 and think it can stand on its own so I'll do 3:  "Humanity is on its last legs as most of the world's population has been either killed or converted by the mercilous chimera.  As Joseph Capelli you must travel across country and get to New York by any means necessary to save your family.  (I'm going to use 3 here sorry) Infect, freeze, or suck your enemies into a black as a massive, upgrading arsenal is at your disposal to destroy this alien menace."

did you realize he isn't from usa? yesterday alone i saw advertisement for wonderbook bundle, skylanders bundle, psabr for ps3 ad mentioning that you can buy it for ps3 and get if free on vita and the 199€ ps3 model + maxdome ad and fifa for vita ad (on sky when i watched german bundesliga)

do you know that playstation is one of the main sponsors of the champions league? that alone could cost more as the whole ad campaign of microsoft for the xbox in a whole year in germany and some other countries^^

the only ad i saw here for something xbox related in the last weeks was an ad of a retailer selling the console with some games for whatever price, nothing more and that before christmas...

True. There's nothing wrong with Sony marketing. In fact I thought the Vita ads around Black Friday were pretty good.

The PS3 Super Slim is a different story though....I didnt' see any ads marketing this NEW PS3 at all...only those who follow gaming news would know about it.

I think they had good marketing with Butler, but after the marketer who made the commercials/characters left, good marketing left with him. I only saw the "movie trailer" like commercial for Resistance 3, I didn't see the butler commercial. Plus Sony just fired their marketing division for being shitty so it'll be a while before they get everything on track.

Well Infamous 2 was boring, Resistance 3 came after the utterly terrible Resistance 2 which burned a lot of people and Twisted Metal was always niche. This is hardly the stuff for a great marketing campaign really.

ok I will just quote you because you called Resistance 2 Terrible...

Because its an awesome game. I dont care if "Fans" got burned because the game stands on its own and is a very very great game.

+ The ending is absolute wonderful. Man my heart pumped so hard. great experience

(R3 is amazing btw)

Also Infamous 2 is a great game ^^

The fact that it seemed that everybody died kind of left a very bad taste in my mouth. I liked Infamous 1 but Infamous 2 just seemed too repetitive.
