Well there is an element of surprise...of course Nintendo IPs are more or less always based more or less on the same characters. but it's not like all the games are the same.
Mario Galaxy for example had a big surprise element. Of course, it was obvious Nintendo was going to make another Mario game sooner or later, but no one was expecting something like that. It's still a 3D Mario game, but it's completely different from its predeccessors, and before you saw it, the whole idea of Super Mario in space would hve sounded odd if not dumb
Also, not every Nintendo IP gets a proper entry on every console, Metroid skipped the N64, Pikmin skipped the Wii, Donkey Kong Counrty Return was a comeback after 15 years, right now a lot of people are asking a true spiritual successor of Starfox64 (another 15 years old game), and F-zero (the last one was in 2003). Now, it's true a sequel of a very old IP is not something unprecedented like a completely new IP, but after many years a sequel could still feel fresh. Let me ask you a question: if tomorrow Naughty Dog announces a sequel to Crash Bandicoot or to Jak & Daxter, wouldn't you be anticipating it? I guess you would (so would I anyway).
As for the question of "don't you whant something new?" My personal opinion is that games are not like a books or movies. If you see 6 sequels of the same movie you know it will inevitably get old, games don't get old if developers are able to make them better, and to add somthing that will make them feel fresh, Nintendo is particulary good in doning so, imo. That said, I welcome new IPs but I don't whant them just for the sake of getting something new. Very often a new IP doesn't feel fresh at all to me, and in other cases I see new IPs are just replicating old concepts and making them worse. Of course in other cases I get superb games like Demon's Souls.
In other words my top priority is to get great games, my second priority is to get games that feel fresh, getting a new IP may be 3rd priority, since a game can be great and feel fresh even if it's not a new IP. Anyway, I prefer Nintendo but I have all consoles maybe if was an only-Nintendo owner I would be pissed...but I'm not. so I don't know :P
