I am on somewhat of a treadmill when it comes to Gold. I let it expire, and Microsoft makes me a one month for one dollar offer. Which I instantly accept, and then I have to get online to turn off the automatic renewal. Which turns itself back on whether I want it to or not. Needless to say it is a pain in the ass, and I suspect that is the purpose of their scheme. Make it tedious enough that people procrastinate, and forget to turn the automatic renewal off. Anyway I pay twelve dollars a year, but I have to jump through hoops to get that. So I am getting my moneys worth.
What I want from Microsoft if they are going to ask me to pay more. Is nothing less then original content that can make the best use of the platform. The service is basically hollow, and desperately needs large scale community content for subscribers to enjoy at no additional cost. Microsoft started to pioneer the concept a few years ago with Primetime Games, and then got caught up in apps, and parlaying their revenue stream into acquiring exclusives. Which is all well, and good, but a media hub is only worth so much. Especially when you have that on every internet enabled device on the fucking planet.
Primetime Games was a pretty strong concept, and it showed in the participation they got. Users genuinely want to be part of bigger gaming experiences. It doesn't have to be just game shows, or poker tournaments. They could take that concept, and apply it to other genres. What Microsoft needs to do is create a stable of such big games, and people will be more then satisfied with the service.
