Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo blocking 18+ rated Wii U eShop content at certain times

And I thought PSN and XBL parental controls were an inconvenience.

This is ridiculous.

That can't honestly be the only M rated game you know on the Wii.

Which says nothing about the Wii U having several right at launch including a game Nintendo are publishing themselves.

so 18+ is equiveant to M?  I guess i was thinking more like AO.

Very, very few games get an AO rating because no US retailer will carry an AO rated title nor will Sony or Nintendo approve licensing rights for an AO rated game on any of their consoles.  I think MS is the same.

Manhunt 2 for Wii was only the second time in history that a game was given the AO rating.  Rockstar made a few changes (soem screen blurring effect) that enabled it to obtain the M rating instead.  Even with the downgrade to M, many retailers still refused to carry it.

if anyone is wondering where the "kiddy console" stereotype comes from i submit to you exhibit A.

which btw (as i am american) - how much content is actually rated 18+? i thought like virtually no games got that rating (just manhunt and the like) or am i off on the European rating scale?

Yeah, just 2 on consoles.   Manhunt 2 (Wii edition only) and GTA: San Andreas and both were altered to get back to an M rating.

4 other M rated console games received the AO for their PC counterparts and 21 other stand alone PC titles were given the AO rating (of which most are horribly bad games).

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Oh, just Call of Duty: Black Ops II, ZombiU, and other such games generally classified as "M" here in the USA.

This is the stupidest shit I have seen in recent times from Nintendo. Absolutely ridiculous. What's just as ridiculous are the people in this thread trying to say it's even remotely a good idea. Sure, put it under the parental controls, but don't restrict access to adults and those who are allowed to access such content.

Fuck you, Nintendo. You're never going to become anything more than you are because you refuse to understand the audience.

Sigh, sorry, / rant.

Games like cod, fallout, gears of war and skyrim are 18+ with pegi. I'd say that it is a lot of games.

As for Wii U, the current list is here:

Legal age restriction requirements vary across a number of European countries. Since Nintendo of Europe is based in Germany, Nintendo eShop is complying with German youth protection regulation which therefore applies to all our European markets. Under German law, content rated 18+ must be made available only at night.
Therefore the accessibility of 18+ content in Nintendo eShop is limited to [USK: 22:00 UTC until 4:00 UTC] [PEGI: 23:00 UTC until 3:00 UTC].

It's almost like Euro people don't shop in stores or online that they must download the game digitally? Nintendo gone and fucked up now! DOOMED! XD

It's not about that.

Lots of people's first comments in this thread figured out the proper solution to the problem. This is pure incompetence, no matter how small an issue it is.

or they can block out 18+ content completely like the MS plan in the Windows 8 App shop, it really could be worse. It's a stupid business decision for sure since digital distribution would earn them more direct $$, but it could always be worse.

Funny thing is I stayed up later as a kid than I do now as an adult. So actually this concept would inconvenience me far greater now.

I really don't understand going about it this way.

well I can, go buy them in stores or set the Nintendo buildings on fire, either way might work, I suggest the second one though, go do it!

Well, that answers that question.
