Yeah, a fifth of the population of Africa died because of a few hundred guys with a dozen bullets or so each claiming vasth swathes of land many of them didn't even set a foot on, just for bragging rights. Very likely, that one. What are you reading, son? Hobsbawn? Galeano?

The thing is there is a reason Eurasia developed into developed empires rather than staying stone age like America, Africa and Australia. Eurasia's size and eco-diversity gave it more species of domesticable plants and animals than other continents, certain favorable climates and landforms (a Mediterranean dry season eases grain-storage, for example), a long human presence (late discovery of the New World meant mass extinction of large mammals that might have been domesticable), and east-west trade routes (pigs and wheat do well in both France and China, but Mexican corn took centuries to adapt to Ohio). Eurasia and it's three powerhouses - Europe, India and China - probably were 90% of the world's economy or more for at least five thousand years now.

So outside those areas and where there was an active effort to colonize and build a new nation from scratch, like the US, things remain almost as dire as they have been throughout most of history, just with a modern paint of AK-47s so people can kill each other more efficiently and antibiotics so they can overpopulate their lands and live 40 instead of 20 years on average. Now say if Germany won WW1. The european empires would probably have survived to the present and we would have a much different world - one that probably would involve way lower populations in Africa but better infrastructure - even if many of it to economically serve the metropolis - and efficient governments. 

But re-colonize them again? Yeah buddy, I don't know about that. Maybe they should just be left to their own devices, to elect who they want and rewrite the bordes the way they want if that's so much of an issue.

The colonization is the reason africa was f*cked up. Its all about power and influence.

"We" invaded them and forced them to accept our style of hirarchy/society etc. They were tribes living their lives and occasionally fighting other tribes. But we showed them money and  "greed" etc.

And now we keep them down because we want to keep them under control.

I mean why do we sent food etc? Food is the only thing they can produce by themselves and because we send free food their farmers cant sell their food. We should give them infrastructure and material   we should build stuff like sewers, streets,  wood metal etc. we should build channels so they have enough water. We should help them build farms etc... We should help them help themselves.

We still control them and because we sold alot of AK's and jeeps and whatever and demand diamonds etc there is all this chaos.

We are to blame for all this.

The problem with Africa is all the foreign countries fighting for the resource rich continent.

With china rising comes their higher standard of life. they get more loans and stuff. in 10-15 years china won't be able to produce THAT cheap like now. to give you a concrete example, i was producing 2000 CDs in china two years ago. manufacturing costs were somewhere around 3.500€. i was being said that they have to ask for like 4000€ when i wait too long.
so what i try to say is: maybe some clever firms try to produce in africa. problem is you will do hard to find stable regions. but i never understood. there are people starving. they would work for a hunger loan just to get something to eat. give their children school education and they'd be so happy to work. that won't cost too much and you could produce iphones and stuff over there. and noone could complain about low loans.

I really don't give a shit about Africa. I just wish we'd stop sending aid there.

It's their own fucking fault they're so poorly off. For God sakes ancient Greeks and Romans were more advanced than modern Africa, at least they had early sewage systems and didn't shit and bathe in their own drinking water. And for God sakes maybe if they all stop fucking each other, or at least wear a damn condom then half the continent wouldn't have AIDS.

I also don't care if every western country cancels the debt Africa owes them in exchange for never sending aid ever again. Let them figure out how to build a proper civilization like the Europeans, Asians and Americans (I mean North and South America, not USA) had no touble doing. Africa is the only continent that can't figure it out.

resources that should be used to actually better the country

oh and btw european countries ( this also includes former colonies like a america ) can definitely be said to be at least a large part of the reason africa is the way it is now

for the poll i'll pick other - use the resources being stolen from africa to actually improve the country... of course that won't ever happen because many european industries will then collapse
