i've had to play move games with the dualshock in one hand instead of the nav controller. trust me when i say it sucks. having the gamepad in one hand as the shield would suck even worse.

Did you read the op? And the posts after?

i get is, connect the gamepad to the nunchuck.  it's still will hurt your hand.  the dual shock isn't very heavy but the torque on the hand hurts quite a bit.  the gamepad is even heavier.  i promise you will not be comfortable for more than 10 minutes.

Okay, that's not what you were saying at first.

Anyways, the padlet is pretty light, and I admit this is the "core" gamer setup, so I wouldn't expect kids to use it. But, the whole point of it feeling like a shield would require it to have some kind of weight. It weighs 1.1 pounds, which is just 3 times heavier than the wii-mote.

As a secondary control input I think that's a reasonable weight.

1.1 isn't light enough though.  take your hand and hold it straight out with 0.0 pounds in your hand.  you won't be able to do that for very long.  mario kart's wii wheel was heavy too, a lot of people commented on it.  but mario kart has an advantage .. a match lasts about 2-3 minutes and then you take a 1-2 minute break during results and track choosing.  zelda, as is, doesn't have those small bite sized gaming chunks which is exactly why the weight would negatively impact gameplay.  i suppose you could modify zelda's formula to accommodate but personally i think that would be a bad thing for the franchise.

gamepad as a shield? horrible idea would be super uncomfortable

If they had some kind of attachment that could hook the gamepad to your forearm then it could be intersting, but really how often do you use the sheild that you would need to do that? If there was another game where you had a gun and had the gamepad on your arm. You have to look at the gamepad to select modes and change settings on your future suit and the nunchuck was used to move and the wii mote to shoot your gun. It could be interesting.

I always felt like they could have mapped the sword swing to the right analog stick. I mean there's no need to have the Right analog be the camera. Nintendo's been working without it for years and all of their games have worked perfectly fine without having the player have manual control over the camera. Thus with the second analog you could do all the sword movements movements you need.

A quick flick in a direction and he will slice in that direction. Hold it in a direction and he'll charge for a stronger attack. Pressing R3 will do a sword thrust. It's pretty simple and with Nintendo land you already know how the bow, sling shot, and other projectile weapons will work on the game pad.

Those who want to use the Wii mote should be able to use the option as well.

I'm not saying it's the best thing since sliced bread, but the MK fatigue argument isn't good. If the player is running, he doesn't need to hold his shield up. For most of the game, the shield is down.

Zelda U will use the GamePad exclusively, and I can't wait. I despised the motion controls. A hi-def, traditionally controled Zelda warms the cockles of my heart thinking of Zelda 1, LttP, OoT and Majora's Mask. I suspect you'll see some novelties like a Batman-style "scanner" mask using the pad screen, an instrument which requires tapping, perhaps an advisor side-kick that communicates telapathically on the Pad and so on, but I think the main combat will be dual analog based. I'm just really hoping for a cool art style...something very detailed and mystical looking. Shadow of the Colossus influence on the graphics would be amazing.

No.

If anything, I foresee 100% stylus-control, a la the DS Zelda games. Get ready for a whole lot of scribbling, tracing and tapping!

Zelda on WiiU will be infinitely better than Skyward Sword for the sole reason that Link with not go into a spasm every 2 minutes looking at the floor or ceiling and spinning in circles due to needing re-calibrate a Motion+ wiimote that loses calibration every 5 or so swings.

I didn't have this problem when I played Skyward Sword.
