What's morsi doing in Egypt?

Anyway, as long as Egypt is democratic, why the fuck are people complaining about it? I mean, the religious attitudes there has obviously been opressed for a long time and they are going to surface in a democracy. When the population itself gets more enlightened, things will work out.

To be fair, Egypt isn't an Islamic country. The only two Islamic countries, i.e., countries in which Muslim clergy are directly involved in governing, are Saudi Arabia and Iran. Also, I'd like to point out that the interpretation of Islam in Saudi Arabia is a particularly cruel, tribalistic, and patriarchal interpretation, one that is a gross perversion of Islam's basic religious and social tenets.

Well, Caliphate is a very loaded word. It really isn't relevant to modern Egyptian political discourse; to be honest, it hasn't meant what it was designed to mean for about 1,000 years. I admit the recent declaration from Morsi is troubling indeed, but I believe it has more to with preserving his political power, and very little to do with Islam.

no saddam was a nice guy, never hurt a fly.


He did... but there are times in the evolution of a sociaty, when a dictator is far better suited for the job of governing a country, and the arab world just barely got there
