To be fair, Egypt isn't an Islamic country. The only two Islamic countries, i.e., countries in which Muslim clergy are directly involved in governing, are Saudi Arabia and Iran. Also, I'd like to point out that the interpretation of Islam in Saudi Arabia is a particularly cruel, tribalistic, and patriarchal interpretation, one that is a gross perversion of Islam's basic religious and social tenets.

Well, Caliphate is a very loaded word. It really isn't relevant to modern Egyptian political discourse; to be honest, it hasn't meant what it was designed to mean for about 1,000 years. I admit the recent declaration from Morsi is troubling indeed, but I believe it has more to with preserving his political power, and very little to do with Islam.
