What's wrong with going digital only? Why the hate? I wouldn't (I love having CDs), but it seems like a good thing to do... I like the idea of going over a friend's house with your external HD, plugging it into his Wii U, and you have all of your games on it... Or is that not possible.?

not hating, but I am just saying whats the point of having a console if you're going all digital, you know consoles, ... "pop the disk in and play"
going digital would mean download, and then if its on external , it will not work until you install it on Internal HDD

from what i have read as long as its not a flash drive you can install and play games from and external drive so its no problem.

? What does this have to do with anything? Why is going digital better on PCs?

-sigh-
whats the point of getting a Wii U if you are not going to buy any games on it? ,lots of games wont be releasing on E-Shop, because frankly they're way too big to download.
but thranx pointed out that your external HDD can work without installing to internal, which is great news, someone should test this.

Steam is probably cheaper than console. But it doesn't really change anyhting in this case, if you want nintendo games buy a nintendo system, and they have digital now too.

Why are you sighing, it's no surprise that the games will be playable from the EHD, they are 4+GB each? The basic model has 8 GB full storage and the latest update was 4GB. It's a no-brainer man.
to go digital only they have to promise me that i can play all my dl games on all future consoles, or at least it should be possible to download it forever and wont shut the online down after x years.
*cough* xbox1 *cough*
otherwise i would only buy digital if its:
- region locked on disc but not in store and not coming to my region
- discs are $100+
- not available as a disc release
- vconsole game *cough* nostalgic fan
on topic:
but i dont think activision has anything against digital releases, since they are doing it big time on the pc and its more profit for them to have a copy sold digitaly than a disc release.

i believe the wiiU can play games directly off the external drive.
