Forums - Sony Discussion - Ultimate Goal for Orbis: Run 1080p, 60frames with no problem. Powerful enough for today and tomorrows markets. Affordable but not a slouch.

I wonder if devs will go a resolution between 720p and 1080p, sort of how a few of them don't use full 720p and go for 640p to help maintain a higher framerate?

i highly doubt that. the difference between 720p and 1080p is sometimes hard to see - why choose another resolution between it?

and as i said before: i don't really care for 1080p - i would prefer 720p with decent aa over 1080p.

The difference between 720p and 1080p is astounding to me. In fact I see a big difference between 720p and 1366 x 768 (that's what my monitor goes up to). I find 720p notably blurry in comparison. Is that just me?

Sigh... you can't aim for 1080p @ 60fps. If you have that much extra power to work with, developers will beef up the graphics until it's running at 720 @ 30. They will use that power if you make it available to them.

Yeah, that's why I don't think these rumours are legit. Sony would never commucinate in those terms when explaining the power of the console to developers or when expressing what they would like to see from developers in next gen games.

I mean, the "1080p" thing could be a selling point that Sony would like to see as a target, but not the 60 frames per second, and especially not the combination of the two.

And don't forget in 3D! lol

OT: Personally I think 16gb of RAM is overdoing it, even 8gb seems alot. WiiU has 2GB and Ps360 has 500mb, we all seen the wonders that was possible on Ps3, with Halo 4 looking even more impressive so 16 times that RAM seems alot and 32times seems ridiculous. Altho 8gb seems alot I think is plausible.

!6gb of RAM, with 250gb of HDD and obviously a stronger CPU and especialy a stronger GPU for the 1080p/60fps/3D part... If this is true, I'm no expert but I doubt that they can make it 499$ while still being profitable.

Also, despite the part of the Orbis being announced right before E3 2013 being plausible imo, I seriously doubt it will launch in Fall 2013, I predict Fall 2014 or at the EARLIEST spring 2014.

Dev kits often get double the RAM than the actual retail system. So it's 4-8GB rather than 8-16 :)

Yes it's just you.

What you're seeing is not the difference in native resolutions, what you're seeing is scaling artifacts that your monitor causes when it tries to scale a game res of 1280x720 up to its own native monitor res of 1366x768.

It's an important and common phenomenon though that is seldom mentioned in graphics discussions, because that difference caused by resolution scaling can be shockingly bad.

1080p 60fps capability shouldn't even be a question. Either way, I'm excited for this news, and cannot wait what PS4/Orbis will have to offer.

How does these rumored specs compare with the Wii U?

If this is legitimate, it seems Sony are trying to create a very smooth user experience coupled with specs that allow for easy development. Key areas the PS3 encountered problems. Lets hope they've learnt from some of their other mistakes as well.

Also, I actually hope they don't call it the PS4. They need to be daring with their new console, create something totally new and exciting. Re-branding the PS division and giving it a completely new look might work in their favor.

usually the view-distance when watching from a monitor is less than from a tv. and i think most people play on tv and not on a monitor.

I really can't understand why people want a cheap console. Do you want to buy a new one in 5 years?

PS3 was not cheap, but im on my third one. Unless you ment a PS5 then im not sure why you say that when most owners have had a PS3 break at least once.

I was referring to a successor. just imagine you bought a ps3 on launch day... you'd be able to play uncharted 3 in 3d now with the same old hardware which is kind of awesome!

what i mean is: lower entry price = shorter hardware lifecycle. this would lead to less coding optimisation and the consoles would turn into standartised pc devices.

what i want is a powerhouse for 500-600€. totally focused on 3d gaming and safe to say it will provide top notch graphics for the next couple of years.

Yup, I'll pay more money. Sony has no interest in another console war, they'll let MS market to the lowest common denominator and instead they will put out a high-end, high-quality, expensive console. That is my demographic, and that is what I want.

Sounds okay. I hope they update the Piledriver based APU to next years core. There's a good chance they will be able to do it if final dev kits will hit next summer.

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

If the only difference is slightly better graphics and 1080p between PS3 and 4 then adoption will be slow. Especially if the same games runs on both systems (which is highly likely based on this)
