Don't worry too much about stats on your first play. Those stuff are crazy.
God dammit now I have this huge wave of nostalgia -- I have to go start playing my original Silver again. I'm glad you're enjoying your experience so far! Pokemon is a fantastic franchise.

Ah sorry dude, I won't be using any cheats or stuff like that... I think it's way more fun to play it the way it was intended.
This thread made me really want to go buy Pokemon Black or white. I haven't played one since Red.
Get a Geodude. They stagnate in the latter game unless you can trade, true, but they are very useful early on. Plus, Geodude is elementally disparate from Cyndaquill, making it a good partner. At least, until you fight Water Pokemon. Then they're both fucked.
Don't get a Hoot-Hoot. They can be useful eventually, but take a lot of patience.

I'm skeptical of it. I just don't know what they'll add that will make me want to pick up the game. I'll probably end up getting it eventually.

Make sure to have a Geodude for the first gym battle, he will save you lots of stress afterwards you can ditch him.
