The PSV is a headache that Sony could do without; especially considering their financial situation. I say drop the system and concentrate on home consoles. X720 is looking like a beast and the WiiU will launch a year ahead (at the very least) of PS4. Re-launching the system when it becomes financially viable is the only option.

No they shouldn't drop PSVita i would say it's the  acquisition of sony ericsson and gaikai it's the reason of loosing money why you don't say in 2007-2008 Sony should discount the PS3 because it was able to make a 5 billions lost for Sony?

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

I don't think european 3DS XL numbers are bad. It's just one day and europe is not really handheld crazy anyway. Also I don't think Sony is too concerned with the Vita right now, they may have made peace with the prospect that the device will only sell tiny amounts for the time being as long as it isn't cutting into Sony's profits. Sony is preparing to be the loss leader with the PS4 again so they just can't afford to change anything about the vitas course right now. Accelerating game developement and probabla pushing out more grapes like Resistance wouldn't help either. The Vita will pick up steam at the end of this year or early next year. Until then, Sony is sitting this out.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Those 3ds numbers are excellent, but now it remains to see if it can produce a sustained boost like the DS lite did for the DS

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
Too bad it won't last, but those are amazing numbers in Japan for the 3DS - it'll reach 7 million there soon ,in the end of the month and pass the PS3 (8mi now ) before the end of the year for sure - in less than 2 years. Quite impressive.
In the other markets... meh, and shall be forever meh, unfortunately. 3DS at least will be fine in the west, since the flow from japanese games will remain strong. Vita on the other hand might want to fix that japanese problem as soon as possible, or else it'll know the hell of being dependent to western third parties when you're a portable, especially if they don't sell great in the first tries - mediocrity all around.
YOY
PS3 down 31k or 20%
360 down 44k or 33%
Wii down 70k or 55%
3DS up 289k or 450%
Psp + Psv down 47k or 36%
Sometimes I wonder whether Microsoft are going to cut the price or if they are going to keep it up to build up the perception of them being a 'premiere brand'. The good thing about their actions regardless is that people ought to be more willing to buy close to launch given the fact that they kept the price so consistant these past years and they covered their early mistakes with an extended warranty. With Sony I get the feeling that a price cut AND a revision are likely to be close at hand so sometimes I feel that buying on launch can leave you in the lurch on both.
Tease.
3ds in japan is a monster while vita can 't catch up even psp at this point
Thing is not only Mario had 2 days of sales. Those 240k 3DS were sold in 2 days also. That's really unreal for a redesign. PS3 Slim managed 237k in 4 days, but it was during the biggest week of the holidays + FF doing 1,5 mi (Wii did 210k for that week, for example, and DS 200k).
Doing those numbers alone in july-august in 2 days only is really a first. We can only imagine what'll happen in the holidays!
Just shows how Seventh gen consoles are starting to slow and the industry is ready for the next console cycle.
Though i wonder how much longer the PS Vita can last with those sales and what it going to take to get it going again.
The PSP was popular when it came out due to its sleek design but many people were burned by its lacklustre software line-up failing to introduce enough original titles for the handheld.
We're on the seventh generation of home consoles at the moment.  Although I'm sure you're right that the sales for the PS2 are starting to slow too!
edit: On Topic, 3DS wow, Vita sniff.
Releasing the 3DS XL was a stroke of genius from Nintendo. I think the boost will be sustained too, like the PS3 slim.
