Forums - Gaming Discussion - Practical question: Why get a 3DS or Vita instead of a tablet?

I am faced with a practical concerns question, and limited funds.  Yes, I am tempted to get a 3DS or Vita sometime, but then I am faced with a greater need to get something that would let me access the Internet on the fly (without a laptop, to see videos, and so on), carry PDFs of my game designs with me, and maybe even eBook stuff.  In light of this, I have to ponder why to get a 3DS or Vita.  I thought maybe they would offer me a shot of surfing the web devices with at least YouTube, but I am not seeing that.

So, can anyone here can be able step in and explain why to get a 3DS or Vita, and if the devices are sufficient for accessing the web, and maybe I got information wrong?

Not if you need something for practical work, no, the issue is that you still get superior game experiences on the other two.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

The 3DS' web browser is pretty meh. Can't speak for the Vitas.

Do you want to play games, or browse the internet? If you want to browse the internet, buy a tablet. If you want to play games, buy a 3DS or a Vita.

Dedicated gaming experience. Can't speak for 3DS as I don't have one but with Vita you get great physical controls, higher budget core games and a lot more of them. It's also much cheaper than any tablet with specs that can compete.

They're not the best browsing devices, I only use them if I'm feeling too lazy to get my laptop (3DS is wifi only btw)

Obviously, the main reason to get a 3DS or Vita is if they have a game that you really want to play and it can only be played on it. Unless there's a game (better if there's more than one) that you really want, I wouldn't buy a dedicated handheld if I were you, especially if you have limited funds and must choose.

There were a few games that I wanted on 3DS + a TON of DS games I couldn't play cuz mine broke = I decided to buy a 3DS instead of a new phone a couple of weeks ago. I don't use 3G/whatever for internet and I have a laptop so I didn't really care for a tablet either.

If the stuff you mentioned (internet, PDFs...etc) is important to you and you don't have any must have games in mind for 3DS/Vita then I say go for it and buy a tablet!

The games. They not only have games with incredibly more depth than tablets, but they also have better capabilities for having better games.

I recently bought my very first iphone a few weeks ago, and I was actually excited to start downloading games and playing on it. But then I found out that there's not even a game like ALTTP on it, and that all of them are very shallow experiences and offer nothing great for real gaming. I looked at numerous top 50 app lists and recommendations online and I've come to the conclusion that the games I enjoy playing simply aren't there.

That's why I love my 3DS.

I don't need to use the internet on the go, so the 3DS is better than a tablet for me

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
you can carry a 3DS or a Vita in your pocket
I LOVE ICELAND!
I never understood why anyone would opt to get a tablet over a notebook computer, they are about the same size, but the notebook has far more functionality. If you want internet on the go, get a decent smartphone, that serves my Googling and Wikipedia needs.
For the games brah
