Forums - Gaming - And people are surprised publishers want to kill the used game market...

Seen today at best Buy ;

- Batman Arkham City trade-in value : 4$

- Batman Arkham City preowned : 44.90$,  90% profit margin.......

- Batman Arkham City new : 49.90$ ( includes cat woman DLC)

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Its people trading in for that pathetic price to blame, not the store. If no one trades in batman at the $4 price then best buy will raise it to a price people will

The game released more than 6 months ago... and if anyone wants to buy the game used when a new copy is only 5 dollars more expensive, well... their loss.

The question should be why the hell is Akrham city still that expensive? Maybe you should look for it in another shop instead of trying to get raped on a used copy?

That's why you should only use Ebay. Both parties get a FAR better deal.

Yep unfortunetly the only way the hardware manufacturers can do anything is if they all coordinate. Meaning all three hardware companies put locks into their hardware to avoid used games from being played. Unfortunately for MS or Sony if they implement locks and Nintendo does Nintendo will crush them. Retailers will promote the hardware that allows used games. So WiiU/3DS would get 50% of the shelf space if not slightly more. GameStop/BestBuy etc..etc.. would do everything they can to promote the platforms that allow used game sales. Attempts by publishers and developers will not work the online passes won't stop GameStop from selling the used games. The only way I see publishers getting rid of used sales entirely is to switch completely to downloadable content. But that too would be very difficult to do.

Used game sales will continue to be an issue for at least another two generations!

I think this gen has demonstrated that you only need Sony and Microsoft to do the same thing as the games available on Nintendo's platforms tend to not be the same than on the others 2.........

And publishers can do things too. Sure retailers can presure them on a lot of titles. But games like CoD pretty much make or break an earnings quarter at a retailer...( that's pretty much how it works, to sell CoD you need to devote a good part of your shelf space to Activision..)

Besides the thinking that if those platforms do something against used games will mean retailer will boycott them doesn't hold up...

So gamestop is going to loose the used game sales and on top of that they would willingly loose the hardware and new game sales ? They might as well close shop...

And it's not like there isn't a Wallmart less than 10 miles away from most Gamestop or that Amazon isn't serving the whole nation......

Do you know how many companies do this with there trade ins? Yeah, almost all. (Some of the worst at GameStop.) It is ridiculous and most of it doesn't even go to the developer of the game/item.

Expanding on my previous post.

If both HD consoles provide what publishers wants for used games, do you really think they will put all the stops to make all their titles available on the platform that doesn't ? I seriously doubt it. If Nintendo doesn't do something for used games but the other 2 consoles do you can be sure that third party support on Wii U will be as bad or worse than what the Wii got......... ( which is probably why Microsoft and Sony are looking so seriously at this, anything that can handicap Nintendo is good for them and the Wii U is probably too far along now to incorporate this..)

Would anyone be surprised if they also wanted to kill the selling of videogames so you owned them forever also? If they could replace it with a rental model, where they keep the profits, or pay to play like the arcade model of they past, anyone think they wouldn't do that? Why should I care what publishers want? I care that I get my money's worth from the time and money I spend.

Ail GameStop wouldn't boycott Microsoft or Sony they would simply promote Nintendo's hardware more give it more shelf space. Not only would they have more shelf space for new hardware/software but they would also give Nintendo used game shelf space.

Also yes if NextBox and PS4 are as expensive as they sound and/or game retail prices go higher yes Sony and MS combined will lose market share.

Your also forgetting consumers. It isn't just the retailers that enjoy used game sales. I know customers that trade their new games in within days of purchasing them if they don't think the game was good enough to hang onto. Maybe the customer is short by 20$ to buy the new game they want they trade in a game and whoola they have the new game.

For GameStop to make all that money on used game sales first their must be customers selling them the used software and B their must be consumers who like buying the cheaper used software.

Third parties attempts will bring in extra cash as some customers will buy the online codes. But it won't likely stop used game sales. Actually it might be better for the third parties if used game sales continue. EA gets 100% of the online passes
