Forums - Gaming - And people are surprised publishers want to kill the used game market...

WTF $4 for Batman Arkham City. Sell you games to non big chain retailers hell even your friends would offer you a way better price.

I thought this was already known? Retailers make huge profit off used games. It's a rip off that you only get $4 off Arkham City..it's worth wayy more than that..it was voted Game of The Year in some places.

Weird. I went to trade in my copy of heart gold the other day, and got almost 10 bucks for it trade in credit. The used cost is 24. I think it has more to do with supply and demand.

I'm the result of someone exclusively playing Final Fantasy XI from the PS2 release till 2010, and only stopping for small bouts of catch up.

3DS Friend Code: Tate - Uh.. stuff happened... I need to get a new 3DS

Switch FC: SW-3272-7705-6029

If you add me, please let me know so I can add you back. =D

FFXI Character: Formally Tatewaki of Cerberus, Now Arngrim Of Sylph.  Retired forever. ; ;

FFXIV Character: Tate Raken of Hyperion

All time favorite game: Chrono Trigger.

All time favorite Manga: One piece... Followed by Ranma 1/2.

Yep unfortunetly the only way the hardware manufacturers can do anything is if they all coordinate. Meaning all three hardware companies put locks into their hardware to avoid used games from being played. Unfortunately for MS or Sony if they implement locks and Nintendo does Nintendo will crush them. Retailers will promote the hardware that allows used games. So WiiU/3DS would get 50% of the shelf space if not slightly more. GameStop/BestBuy etc..etc.. would do everything they can to promote the platforms that allow used game sales. Attempts by publishers and developers will not work the online passes won't stop GameStop from selling the used games. The only way I see publishers getting rid of used sales entirely is to switch completely to downloadable content. But that too would be very difficult to do.

Used game sales will continue to be an issue for at least another two generations!

Expanding on my previous post.

If both HD consoles provide what publishers wants for used games, do you really think they will put all the stops to make all their titles available on the platform that doesn't ? I seriously doubt it. If Nintendo doesn't do something for used games but the other 2 consoles do you can be sure that third party support on Wii U will be as bad or worse than what the Wii got......... ( which is probably why Microsoft and Sony are looking so seriously at this, anything that can handicap Nintendo is good for them and the Wii U is probably too far along now to incorporate this..)

I think Ali has kind of a point here...kind of. If  both Nxbox and Ps4 implemented anti used sales measurements Publishers might forget about Nintendo, BUT it will depend on how gamers react to it. I think most of us have at least bought a game that wasnt that good and sold it later for a piece of the original price, or bought a used game beacuse it was cheap and in good conditions. Having lost that option might be a factor in if gamers decide to support the console or not, specially if we keep doing this business of $60 for half the game and the rest DLC, if the console its not suported by gamers, publishers wont support the console.Nintendo has showed other gens to be able to keep afloat with their games only,even while being the last in sales, not so sure the others might bea able to.

In the worst sceneario publishers will support a console that it's not respected by gamers and everyone will suffer...Then people will switch to PC.In other scenario gamer might give up and accept their fate dooming Nintendo to last place again, which i highly doubt giving how the comunnity has reacted to some measurements like the RE mercenaries scandal.

I think it will be more healthy for publishers to own the second market rather than dissapearing it. It will depend on us to accpet it or not.

i guess it would give publishers a new excuse not to release games on a Nintendo console as the old excuses are becomign tiring.

Nah, i think they wiil see it as a viable platform for multiplats even with midsucces.

Look at it this way: If they merely rented titles, wouldn't they also put money back in?  They could actually continue to fund support for titles in question, and upgrade them.

Reality is that this is irrelevant to what publishers will or will not do.  They do what they think they have to do, to keep people interested, and then charge whatever they can charge to maximize interest.  They could, rather than go, "Boo hoo hoo, used game sales suck" and try to say it is the same as piracy, end up making games people won't trade in.  It isn't my problem if you think the idea is to make a play through once interactive move, and sell it for $60.    Reason why publishers won't knock $5 off is that they charge what the market can bear, not what seems "fair".

You can find a decent number of games people don't trade in either, here:

http://boardgamegeek.com/

They also have the ability to sell them on EBay, if they don't like them.

Man, I wish I could still get people together for some board games. But the fact is, I'm better off buying the iPad version of those games for $5-10.

I think you missed the point of my post, but whatever.

The way I see it, a used game market provides a way for consumers to free up some money that could potentially be used to buy new games. It would be nice to see some data on what percentage of trade in money goes towards used or new games. Also, a thriving game retailer equates to massive advertisement for games and hardware. Game stores have an incentive to advertise new games, not just for their profit margin off the new title, but also that the store the consumer is most likely to trade in their used game will be the one they bought it from. I think this war against used games is overplayed and rather not thought through. Pirating is far worse, renting is worse too. A big name game being rented out by a store could receive dozens, hundreds of uses. At least with used game more money flows back into the system.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Its people trading in for that pathetic price to blame, not the store. If no one trades in batman at the $4 price then best buy will raise it to a price people will

It's those "moms" that try to teach their kids about the value of money by making them trade in their old games and get screwed over.

Seen today at best Buy ;

- Batman Arkham City trade-in value : 4$

- Batman Arkham City preowned : 44.90$,  90% profit margin.......

- Batman Arkham City new : 49.90$ ( includes cat woman DLC)

Wouldn't that be 1000% profit margin ?

Indeed!
