Forums - Sony Discussion - I'm Downloading a PS1 Game For PS3 But Which One?

Which PS1 game should I download for my PS3?

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night 3 15.00%

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back 4 20.00%

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped 4 20.00%

Crash Team Racing 1 5.00%

Chrono Cross 0 0%

Chrono Trigger 5 25.00%

Final Fantasy VII 1 5.00%

Final Fantasy IX 1 5.00%

Metal Gear Solid 1 5.00%

Tomb Raider 0 0%

Total:20

I've decided to download a PS1 game for my PS3 and am torn between a few. I've always wanted try Crash 2: Cortex Strikes Back in full detail, as I never owned it but played some parts of it when I was around the age of 6. I owned Crash 3: Warped and played it frequently and considered it a classic, however I may be too used to the levels to still immerse my self in the game. One of the Spyro games was a consideration, however they don't appear to be on the EU PSN store. Final Fantasy IX is also a consideration to play as Vivi.

These are just some considerations but I'm welcoming to suggestions of PS1 games I have not yet played.

What genre are you looking for?

Adventure.

Warning: You will be disappointed. This is inevitable. Whether you are springing for a classic you've never tried, or a much loved game from when you were younger, the reality is not going to meet your expectations. So, remember that these games were made around 15 years ago, and lower your expectations accordingly.

Having said that, I bought Crash 3 for PS3 fairly recently after owning it on PS1, and despite how outdated it is, I've enjoyed it a great deal, so I recommend going for that.

EDIT: I should point out that Metal Gear Solid is very widely loved, but I honestly found it unplayable, it was so dated. And stay the hell away from Syphon Filter, especially if you've ever liked it in the past.

While its not really adventure, Metal Gear Solid 1's gameplay has held up pretty well over the years. Gameplay wise its pretty much MGS2 and MGS3 with PS1 graphics.

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

You mentioned Final Fantasy IX, if you are concerned about how well some of these older games are aging. Get FF9. It's very well made and came out late in the PS1 lifecycle, taking advantage of everything the system had to offer(to make an RPG). Though I didn't like it as much as 7 or 8, it is great in its own regard and pretty much just under tied with those titles.

As for action games? Go with jumping flash, can't recommend that game enough.

You could always time a good PS Plus month subscription. In the US there is Silent Hill for free this past week. In the past I've collected all 3 Crash Bandicoot games and the racing game, all 3 Siphon Filters, FF5, all 3 Resident Evils, and a few others over the course of a year. A ton of non-psone titles too, Shaft 2, Shift 2, Tomb Raider...you know what there are way too many games they give out for free with plus. With minis I'm probably pushing 100 games from Plus for free.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Final Fantasy IX is awesome. And has aged well.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is another great PSOne game. I don't think there was a better Castlevania since then...

There's so much to consider, and so many good PS1 titles. Right now, I have downloaded:

Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Vagrant Story
Chrono Cross
Chrono Trigger
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Command and Conquer
Crash Bandicoot
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped

Not to mention the Resident Evil Games, Metal Gear Solid, Twisted Metal, dozens of others. What I'm trying to say is that there's little chance you can go wrong. If you're looking for adventure, Castlevania is likely your best bet.

Or screw it and get Journey. That's a game you can't go wrong with.

My Console Library:

PS5, Switch, XSX

PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, WiiU, Wii, GCN, N64 SNES, XBO, 360

3DS, DS, GBA, Vita, PSP, Android

Chrono Cross!

Don't listen to the "it's a terrible sequel" argument. It's a good classic JRPG.
