Forums - PC Discussion - Will PC gaming ever become bigger then console?

What are your thoughts, can PC gaming become bigger then console gaming one time in the future?

nope as PC will get smaller

and we will stop using PC's the way we do today and have all in ones

but PC and consoles are both computers

No. PC gaming may take off a bit with the advent of digital distribution, but high end desktops may become less popular with the rising popularity of laptops and tablets. Consoles, meanwhile, still have room to grow, as they are just starting to expand into the new method of distribution.

Love and tolerate.

I dont really care, As long as I can play AAA titles on my babies (Ps3 Xbox 360, mainly 360) Im happy.

Yay!!!

PC gaming will never ever be more popular than console gaming. Nintendo and Sega ( the major competitors of gaming) were already making millions in the 1980's long before PC gaming . PC gaming didn't become slightly popular until the late 90's- end of 90's. all that PC gaming is is for graphics and mods. Nothing else. PC gaming is too expensive while consoles are cheaper and mass produced and are more family friendly. Consoles have more of the greatest games ever made.

Bigger in what way?  Number of people?  Probably already is.  Total revenue?  Maybe.  Sales of big budget retail games?  Probably never.

@ieatbabies

PCs like the Apple II and Commodore 64 both predate the NES and have hundreds of games.

NVIDIA think so lol

Given that the fastest growing market (China) are currently dominated by some form of PC gaming it could happen, as long is you include web bassed gaming portals as PC gaming anyway. China's online gaming market (MMO, F2P and web) grew from $1.6 billion in 2007 to $3 billion in 2010 ($USD). It also depends if you count tablets as PCs I guess as that is a rapidly increasing market and with Windows 8 being designed to run on tablets and desktops it is pretty easy to argue that they are infact PCs.

Looking a bit further into the future than everyone else ( a little bit) I think the distinction will disappear. Services like OnLive will eventually be far more practical and desirable for the average consumer than local hardware. The platforms - however many consoles there are, and pc gaming - will transition to being solely service-based.

I certainly hope not. The PC, in my opinion, is good for flash games and a few "actual" games here and there. Not console gaming.

Ultra fast (fiber to the door) internet is still 15+ years away from making that feasible tho, it is the future just not one we will be seeing any time soon outside of a few main centers anyway.
