Forums - Sales Discussion - Is The PlayStation Vita Really a Sales Success? - IGN

10 weeks in Japan: 3DS - 979K
2 Weeks in North America - 513K
1 week in Europe - 333.5K

Total = 1.825 million 3DS's sold in the same period as Vita sold 1.2 million. 3DS didn't have the advantage of the holiday season either.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes the PSP Vita to catch up to the flop numbers of the 3DS. Currently, the way the numbers are looking, Japan is still Sony's stronghold as far as handheld sales are concerned, it had the best launch there.

So, it's definitely doomed then..

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

Don't have any real evidence, but I can't help but feel the USA numbers are wrong.

I love my Vita but I am not biased to think because I love something must mean whatever it does = awesome and deserves a free ride. The machine needs games. Other then Uncharted and Fifa there isn't really anything else worth buying, especially not at the £30-£40 mark that they are at.
Sony need to get some AAA titles on there, no that doesn't mean some shitty tie in of Killzone or Resistance that people don't care about it means things like Gran Turismo, some GTA game, feck even an updated version of San Andreas would help. It needs unique titles and that is where I have a feeling it could be a problem. Because Vita games are not many miles away from a PS3 game. Which just seems to me we will be seeing more ports then actual new games.

@bolded

I disagree. Having played tons of hours of Rayman, I have to say that it's not only the best platformer I've ever played, but also a perfect game for a handheld. I think platfomers work better on handhelds than shoooters. Also, though I don't like racing games, Gran Turismo seems like a perfect game for the Vita.

In general though, you're right; Sony needs to release more AAA games on the Vita before the Doom and Gloom spreads more and makes any potential owners lose interest.

Japan needs:
dragons crown
little busters
one piece
dragon quest
persona
ragnarok
monster hunter

USA needs
modern warfare
gran turismo

Vita hasn't been out for that long in any of those territories.... either way, the 3DS is the DS' successor and started at $249, while the PS vita is coming off a huge decline in PSP's momentum WW, and also starting at $249, the difference now is nintendo is promoting the 3DS immensely everywhere, and is touting it's $169 price point, meaning the vita is launching with stron competition... either way, the vita is still selling well, of course it won't do 3DS numbers, but it is doing good numbers so far, over 1.2 million for sony is a huge figure considering they are supposedly making a profit on every unit sold....

PsVita is not being sold for profit. I think, from what I can remmember, in 3 years time. Thats why Sony said that a price cut is off the radar...

Yay!!!

Then why the heck do they sell vita for $377 USD equivalent here in Australia!!!! FUUUUU SONY!!!

Yay!!!

The problem I think Sony is going to run into down the road with Vita, and what they've gone through with the PSP, is that I don't think there is a particularly big market out there for epic/console style games on a handheld. 3DS sort of has this issue as well, but at least they have the 3D gimmick and the strength of Nintendo titles like Mario and Pokemon going for it. Sony is really going to struggle to find a strong market for Vita, mainly because I don't think people generally like to play these epic cinematic games that Sony excels in on a handheld. Games like Pokemon, 2D Mario, and unique concepts like Brain Age and Nintendogs on DS are so hugely succesful because they really take advantage of the strengths of a handheld console - the quick, pick up and play type of game. Sony's brand of game usually just kind of conflicts with this stlye.
