Forums - Gaming Discussion - Video Game Analyst Michael Pachter Says Nintendo Is in Disarray

“I think Nintendo is in disarray,” said Pachter. “I think they’ve completely blown the Wii U by not telling people what the price is going to be.

Since when does this matter?? Full of hyperboles. :( what might the consequences of not revealing the price be according to him? His reasoning is so far-fetched... and hard to follow. They have reasons not to divulge price which far outweight any possible cons.

It’s going to launch at $249 because it has to.

Why? Market-wise? The topic is so much more complicated than "Nintendo can't sell a system more than 250$"... We have had intense debates on the 3DS launch price, the factors of which are similar here. Games matter, season matters. All in all those two factors will mainly decide if the WiiU can sell at 300$+, not some trollish wishful thinking.

I think they’re dead anyway because Xbox with Kinect will be priced below that by the time they launch.

Who cares about Xbox with kinect when talking about WiiU launch? The WiiU is next gen! Again, see 2nd point as to what makes a console purchase material. The only way I can follow his logic is if he doesn't consider the WiiU next gen. But for 90Mil+ Wiis sold, consumers will look for a successor.

“Wii was a bubble and that the Wii bubble has burst.” Wii gamers are now playing social games like FarmVille. He said that Nintendo had great success with the Wii, and actually pushed gaming further into the mainstream with its Blue Ocean policy than even the company had planned. But the influx of social games and quality mobile games on tablets and smartphones has killed the Wii. And he believes it will ultimately kill Nintendo’s handheld business."

The Wii bubble may have bursted, but Nintendo games have appeal whether he likes it or not. Sorry for him, people will always buy Nintendo games because they have mass appeal. Good for me because he fools investors, so that devaluates a stock that will necessarily rebound because the devaluation was artificial. This is good news for an educated Nintendo stock investor.

What killed the Wii was improved competitor momentum and Nintendo pulling the plug to focus on next-gen, not farmville or social games.

As for Nintendo's handheld business dying... No comment other than don't quit your day job.

This Patcher is so stupid I cannot believe he can continue to be considered.

It seems he keeps getting more and more into a hole of failure by the week! He just needs to stop predicting.

Pachter really hates Nintendo.

At least he got the pricing statement right. No one (well not no one) would buy the NexBox if it sold for that much. I do agree with the Wii Bubble thing, sort of. The Wii was kind of like the US's Housing Market Bubble. It was doing crazily well at first. Then it kind of slowed and then burst. The thing I dis-agree with is that he dodged around how well the Wii has done. It also keeps selling well over the Holiday. The Wii U's statements were just dumb though.

$250 = It's not powerful.

$251 = It's doomed.

If Pachter says it, that means the opposite will happen...

Great, another Nintendo dominated gen early on.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Got a retro room? Post it here!

4GB HDD? O_o Surely he means 400GB.

I think he's right that $600 for the nextbox would be bad for MS. It was bad for Sony and Sony was riding a wave with a much higher creast than MS has this gen. $499 for Nextbox and PS4 I think. Will be interesting to see them go head to head on price from the start of next gen. I just hope our dollar stays highg so that $499 doesn't translate to $1000 for us. At the moment $499= approx $700 (then there's sales taxes on top of course), which is a much more attractive launch price point.

If Wii U is basically similar tech to PS360 with a tablet controller then $249 sounds about right, and it sounds like a marketable price. Not sure if $349 is marketable, so will be interesting to see what happens.
