Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3: 20GB & 60GB PS3s Discontinued In Japan

This thread was about the ceasing of the 20GB and 60GB models in Japan, it's just like AT to bring in the Wii... Can't ever say anything positive about the PS3...

That's his M.O. though. He had to bring in the Wii's sales to this discussion, even though that was when Wii Fit came out, and PS3 has seen no real big releases in JP during that time.  Just to make a point.  Like I said though, it didn't matter in EU, or in America.  Then the same probably will apply to JP.  I mean, the sales didn't really increase until the forty gig came out, it must have been received pretty well...

About time XD, the faster we get cracking down on the Software Emulation the better. The PS2's game library is just too big to be forgotten, they WILL find a way.

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

Well ,it seems the 80Gb isnt released after all in Japan .I thought I remembered one of the DMC4 PS3 bundle coming with a 80Gb unit .

In any case the 80Gb is being released in Australia (and probably in the rest of the PAL area ) so we cant write off the possibility of the release in Japan .

The better would be though the BC by software .Looking as the PS2 was way less powerful than the Xbox and that the PS3 is somewhat more powerful than the 360 and specially that the 360 emulates the Xbox through sofware I think it comes into the plausible possibilities .

It would mean encoding individual PS2 games for the PS3, which is something I doubt Sony would devote the resources to because again, the PS2 is still available.

MS has a very clear reason to continue using R&D resources on Xbox BC: they stopped selling the hardware. And yet original Xbox games are still available in stores as of this writing. THAT boggles my mind. I've already bought Xbox games that didn't play on the 360 in the past. I've since stopped looking at Xbox games in stores.

I don't know who claimed dropping the initial SKUs is a way to conceal an overall reduction in production, but I'll flat out say wrong, based upon overall sales increases since November (coincidentally with the release of the 40GB SKU/reduced price). The initial SKUs simply cost more to manufacture and Sony would like to see a return to profitability on hardware units in 2009, based upon their press release regarding future projections.

The impact on sales will be absolutely zero. BC won't be that big a deal when the big hitters come railing, and besides; how many still have their PS2's? A whole frickin' lot, that's how many.

this is important why? give me your reasons JL.

It was just a news story I saw last night before I was going to sleep.

I came here to see if anybody was talking about it and when I didn't see a topic I added it.

Discontinuing a model is somewhat big news, don't you think?

^^^ Not really ^^^

They've already done it a couple of times, and not much has changed, actually, sales have risen.

Yes, its big news. This falls in line with Sony attempting to turn a profit in fiscal year 08. Sales most certainly rise when they announce that a model is discontinued, let alone two models.

Thanks for the news, John. A pleasure, as always.

i wonder why they would go and do that

From my perspective, a PS3 with no backwards compatibility is worth that much less (the cost of a new PS2) because I need both. And since my 2nd PS2 is becoming restless, it's an easy-but-frustrating choice to just get a 3rd PS2 now (2 years life per console? That's pathetic to me, but at least it's affordable).

I'll never pay more than $150 for a new PS3 with no backwards compatibility, even if it means I never get one. :p $250 with backwards compatibility would be fine though, I don't mind waiting a few years, considering I waited 3 years for the PS2 to drop in price. :) (I have an *extremely* tight budget, either I get hardware or games, not both)

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.
