Forums - Sales Discussion - Forbes take on PSVita launch

Yeah, traditional media is going to have a feast on this:

During its first week on sale in Japan, PS Vita sold 320 K units. The sales period tracked was just two days, so hopeful fans thought that perhaps the first full week would bring good news.

But the second week brought devastation – just 72 K units sold. [...]

Sony will likely be forced to cut the price of the PS Vita from 24’000 yen to well below 20’000 yen very soon. The upcoming US launch could be a true debacle for several reasons. Sony has decided to price Vita at $250, higher than the Amazon Kindle Fire. The hottest games like the latest Uncharted are priced at $50, while many other major titles are $40. The pricing seems delusional in light of the Japanese response to the PS Vita. The older PSP handheld console has been a bigger hit in Japan than it has been in the US market. The tablet and iPhone market penetration rates in America are higher than in Japan – consumers may well be more reluctant to splurge on expensive, proprietary handheld consoles. The launch of the Kindle Fire at $200 has changed the US consumer electronics pricing environment.

The pricepoint of $250 wouldn't be so bad if the games and accessories weren't also expensive. Sony needs to realize that they don't have the brandname power to sell high-end, expensive products like Apple does. Seriously, fifty dollar handheld games? FIFTY DOLLAR HANDHELD GAMES? Meanwhile the 3DS has several games on sale and the most popular titles are at $40.

I'm positive that the Vita will improve in sales and we'll look back at this period a couple years later in amusement. But Sony definitely needs a change in their business model.

Lol @ "the 3DS may sell over 2O million in the next years". Joke article!

pwin´ every other villain since 1994

Forbes=Gaming knowledge.

I guess it's time to just start gaming on my Android Smartgamingdevices.

Agreed these numbers are kind of scary. I am a ps3 fan and will prob pick up a Vita but not at launch I cant justify dropping money on a a hand held like this when I know it will drop in price down the road.

Resident Evil: Revelations for the 3DS is listed at $50 as well. So it's not just the Vita that is experiementing with $50 handheld games, but yes, $50 HANDHELD GAMES!

Only two sources should work for this time.

The kindle fire does not even compete with handheld consoles, hell I just sent my fire back to amazon cause it sucks. iPhone's and iPads are equal in price to the vita or cost more, so you can throw that excuse out the window.
Vita's second was bad because it has no note worthy software for that region, and it had to go up against 2 of Japan's biggest franchise on a rivals console.

Not to mention Sony most likely did not ship enought wifi models due to them wanting to sell more 3G models for obvious reasons. Sony had plenty of games launched with the vita, but they clearly forgot to launch with a big Japan franchise, minor mistake on their part, but I have faith, there should be plenty of Japan friendly titles by summer or spring 2012
Time will tell, way too early for doom and gloom.

Hoped you all had a great Christmas here on vgc btw!

It will be a tough battle in the states, and more the price of the console, i think the average price of games and accessories will probably be the ones who hold Vita back.
To me, the only real competition is DS and 3DS and Vita just needs to offer something good and compelling to trail it`s own path.

3ds could sell even more then 20 million by end of 2012 its already at 12 million haha

and yes there is 0ne 3ds game that is 50 dollars but thats due to the fact it uses a bigger sd card or capcoms just riping us off,

but the rest are 40 or less lol

This guy should be fired. I'm sick of the comparison between dedicated handheld gaming and this Forbes Magazine guy obviously knows nothing about the gaming industry.

Despite the fact he "covers mobile hardware, software and video games". I mean " There is no doubt that Nintendo’s 3DS is going to sell at least 20 Million units globally over the next couple of years.". Seriously. The 3DS has passed 13 million in under a year. Mario Kart 7 will pass 3 million sold in under a month. Super Mario 3D Land is going to cross 4 million in two months.

Uncharted is a bigger market in North America. Once Call of Duty, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Tales and MotorStorm come out the Vita will be doing much better as well.
