Forums - Gaming Discussion - Blast from the past (2001): Microsoft vs. Nintendo

Looking back, I regret not buying more games for either system. There were a lot of fantastic titles I missed out for on both the original Xbox and the Gamecube. That being said, it made me laugh to see that Microsoft bragged about Halo outselling Luigi's Mansion. Perspective is paramount.

Development of the Xbox costs tons of money. The system itself was sold at a pretty big loss (consider the level of technology it had at the time combined with its media features). This might have been fine if Microsoft had been able to sell large amounts of software to offset their losses on the hardware. However, they only had one big series at the time (Halo), and that didn't even manage to sell as well (at the time) as Sony's Gran Turismo series. Meanwhile, Microsoft paid $375 million dollars for Rare, who would go on to make some of the worst and most embarrassing games of the generation.

Essentially, their overall investments have been FAR superior with the Xbox 360.

Which? Rare or Microsoft Gaming Division? (which is Entertainment and Devices division) Rare are probably not even close to being profitable for Microsoft, that said they didn't buy them for profit, they needed a backbone to their first party line up along with Turn 10, Bungie and Lionhead. They've probably done very well lately though, Kinect Sports franchise is probably over 5 million shipped now, and they worked on Avatars. Not many people realise but they have a say/help with the Xbox OS as well.

EDD made 1.3B profit last year, and 3B profit since they started profiting (which was when Mattrick came in)

At least a little bit. If Sony, as well as many others, and Nintendo were able to
turn a profit with their first console, then why couldn't Microsoft. But I guess that was the price for creating a powerfull console (at the time) with PC-like hardware. It was a cool console nonetheless-both were.

Thus hammering home the point that Microsoft never really cared about video game systems.  They view home console systems the same as computers (except apparently with worse offering).  Microsoft was mainly scared of Sony taking over the living room and turning their video game system into multimedia equipment they are now.  Basically, I don't think Sony or Microsoft really care that much about the video game market.  It is mainly about putting their products into every living room with video games as an almost afterthought (it isn't like this totally now but it grows more and more).  Now you have to install games to play them on video game consoles (one thing video game consoles always trumped PC in that you didn't have to install the damn game and worry about specs (at least you don't have to worry about specs right now).  Also, fuck paying to play for online gaming.   I am going on a little rant but this is how I view both Microsoft and Sony.

We're certainly getting there, even now you almost kinda do, some games require an HDD install or run better with one

funniest blast will be from 2006!!
