Don't know if anyone has noticed this yet, but the 'FIVE' across the V for the GTA V logo has some pretty interesting clues.

The FIVE is the exact same font as is found on a five dollar bill, as is the shade of green and even the patterning on the V.

This would suggest a modern setting, I'm guessing which sends up the recent banking crisis and financial problems...
