Forums - Gaming Discussion - Gears of War 3 raising standards for third person shooters?

I was just reading the article about how "Microsoft's Gritty third person shooter",AKA Gears of War 2006, influenced many of the graphical decisions in uncharted. Now I'm wondering, what features will Gears of War 3 influence in other shooters? Will they make a Horde mode for Uncharted one of these days? Will they influence developers to use a similar credit system in their shooters? Will more developers use the Unreal Engine 3.5? Will Co-op be the next standard? Let's face it wheather you like it or not, this franchise is revolutionary. Lets talk about it!

just wanted to point out Gears of War came out in 2006, and Uncharted came out in 2007.

not really much time, to take much influence from.

its kinda like saying Killzone 3 took influence from Halo Reach's jetpacks.

also, the were mostly talking about aesthetics, more realistic looking, not much about gameplay

original Uncharted was Tolken like fantasty game with dragons... that sound anything like uncharted to you? lot more than just realism

gears is setting the standards for 3rd person multiplayer

uncharted is setting the standards for graphics and singleplayer :)

lets talk instead on elements gears lifted from other games... this look familiar?

uncharted already has a "horde" mode ( which wasn't introduced by gears btw ) called coop arena

i think people are going to have to be far more specific in terms of these kinds of claims... what standards are being reffered to? can't be the cover based gameplay because as i've shown games like killswitch did that years ago... visuals? imo no... what else?

Yes Toastboy let us talk about this!

What about this? Resident Evil 4 raising standards for 3rd person shooters.
The only new thing on GoW is cover system. But overall? I don't know if another games did cover system first. Graphic? Hmmm... Uncharted had more better graphic than gow.

I bought Gears of War 3 the day it came out. No preorder (I don't preorder games in this US economy because I was able to pick up Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops the week they came out with no preorder). I play it's multiplayer everyday.

I love Gears of War 3, but it is not setting standards in terms of balanced, skill-based gameplay. Instead, it is more reminiscent of every other shooter where there are a couple of insta-gib weapons from the get go. In the case of Gears of War 3, the noob cannon is the sawed-off shotgun just like Modern Warfare 2:

As for multiplayer, outside of Horde, Beast, and Casual Versus, it is a shotgun fest just like the 2 previous games. Also, the Retro Lancer is quickly becoming a weapon of choice over the Lancer and Hammerburst for many characters.

As for setting a standard, if you prefer to run-and-gun in shooters and like up-close, in your face multiplayer, then Gears of War is for you as it is for millions of other players.

Great game overall, though I have a few quibbles with weapon balance. Nothing game-breaking, but still a bit cheap.

How did you come to that conclusion?

The ex-Naughty Dog employee's comments didn't mention any game in particular if I'm not mistaken.

Uncharted was revealed at E3 2006, before Gears Of War was even released.
