I'll start by replying to the last. I believe that having depth and breadth in watching things is far more valuable than just sheer numbers.

To the first, I don't think there is a direct relation between popularity and quality, it's just that I find Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece (among others, but I'll stick to the big 3) to be very mediocre shows at best. That's pretty much all I'll say on that topic.

As far as nostalgia, it's a mixed bag. I'll use DBZ again as I know how poorly the story is told and just how badly it progressed. While I still enjoy it as a whole, watching ~274 episodes again would be miserable. I believe they bothered to release Kai because of this. Now, there are shows that still stand up regardless. I've rewatched Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, Trigun, and Bebop. Some of the shows, I've seen as recently as a few months, and I still believe they're just as great or better than the first time I watched. It really just kinda depends on the show (I won't dare delve in Pokemon).

Lastly, I said that I couldn't 'prove' my side in that argument as my evidence is entirely anecdotal and personal experience, and that I still disagree with you regardless. I will say that I generally try to speak or make these lists as objectively as possible. There's many shows that I've given 7s and 8s that I really love, but there's some core flaws with the show (it's the same way for games).

I would prefer not to get into a whole discussion about Dragon Ball Z now... I'm sure most people here have seen it more than once and have their own solid opinion on it, so there's not much reason to do so. I will just say that any issues regarding pacing or editing that the anime has are easily overshadow by everything else to me. I won't deny that it could be better with some good editing (not Kai, which seems to be somewhat of a mess...), but it still has one of the most creative worlds and characters I've seen in anime, along with a very good soundtrack and a great example of animation at the time, which has made it able to compete with newer animation even today.

Given that we all have our own preferences and views, we all have our examples of "issues" that we can ignore or those that are "deal-breaker", depending on the case. Some could watch X (the movie or the series) or Gantz and still put it among their favorites even if they didn't enjoy the endings, while for others it could be a deal-breaker for that. Some can get pass those "fillers" that they dislike, some can't. Some have a problem with "fan service", violence or "moe" designs while others love them. And some can't even watch old anime from the 70s or 80s... There's not such a thing as a perfect anime/game/movie because if there were, we would all have it as our favorite as long as we have experienced it. Wouldn't it be logical to consider this fact before just assuming that "nostalgia" is the reason why many people still love Dragon Ball Z ?

For the record, I did see Trigun and a big part of Gundam Wing (I wasn't able to watch more of it at the time) and as you can see, I don't even include them in my personal top 10. I should watch them again in the original language (I saw them in spanish), but I know that this won't change my mind to the point of putting them above Dragon Ball or most of my top 10. And I also saw Cowboy Bebop's movie but I can't give a conclusive opinion without watching the series, so I'm not fully taking it into account yet.

Still, I completely respect your opinion, and I'm just asking for the same. It's perfectly possible to disagree and defend your points without trying to diminish someone's opinion, like calling their opinions "ridiculous" or dismissing them as "nostalgia" or ignorance. You were even assuming that many people who mentioned shounen series were lacking experience without having any evidence, so the whole argument about it (by amount and/or variety) didn't even apply here.

Finally, let me just say that there's not such a thing as an objective opinion... If it's objective, it doesn't depend on personal perspective and can be evidenced by anyone as long as they experience it, and this topic is clearly the opposite. And with all due respect, I don't know how can you even try to aim for "objectivity" while dismissing an entire genre (shounen) as being mostly bad. By that logic, shouldn't you judge the works on a case by case basis regardless of the genre ? I for one always try to do that and I don't even pretend to be objective.

Anyway... I already wrote too much... So I'll stop now. I won't post again unless there's something specific to answer. I'll read whatever you want to add though.

??? There is serious materials in anime, you just need to be selective, like any other entertainment.

On topic, Im surprise Rainbow: nisha rokubou no shichinin isnt in the top 5 of anyone. Bad name, but its personally the best one ive watch in the last years, not sure when it comes to 5 though.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
