Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How are Nintendo going to win back the 'Core' Gamer?

We'll see... this feels like a deja vu.... a lot of people claiming nintendo will fail... just look at the wii, #1 home console this gen n i doubt is going to change.

Still more than a year for the launch let's wait....

I'm not talking about a fail, I'm talking about attracting the core gamer.

don't talk about graphics, both the Zelda WiiU and the tech demo are clearly better graphics than Ps3/Xbox360 (i have both on HD tv with HDMI|), and if PS4/Xbox720 cannot do MUCH BETTER than that, then it's good for Ninty

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Well... with core games? like the ones they showed? I guess there gonna be still more to come this way, like I said, give it some time. It was a good sign that core games were already announce (even if some of them are ports/remakes)

I.e. Who in their rightful mind thought that the Wii version of Resident Evil 4 was gonna sell more than a million, when they game saw the light in Game Cube n Ps2..... ???

I think the touch screen adds a similar functionality for the mass market that the Wiimote had. Since it is packaged with every console, it would sell more consoles overall as well. So Nintendo doesn't seem to have a specific market in mind, nor did they seem to have a specific market  this current/last generation. They always seem to moderately please everybody. Those who like Nintendo games will buy the console regardless, and the appeal of the touch screen controller functionality will sell to the mass market who are interested by such innovation with easy access, opposed to add-ons , which while they may be innovative, won't have the same appeal as a pack-in that has every game built for the controller. I always plan to buy Nintendo consoles because the first party games appeal to me. The games that come on HD consoles that interest me usually come on PC. So the appeal of this console to a gamer who plays more regularly, or "core" gamer are the Nintendo games as well as the third party support it will get for being moderately in the same ball park as the other consoles graphically, or at least to the extent where a new game wouldn't have to be made to port. As for the occasional gamer, the appeal is in the uniqueness of the design and that of the functionality the controller brings. Since they don't play regularly, the size probably won't be an issue, actually it would probably be a convenience.

I really am puzzled by what I've seen. (1) The graphics are on par with PS360, so no that isn't a box ticked Reggie.

He claims it'll have online but won't talk about it, whatever it is, (2) it won't be better than Xbox Live or PSN for obvious reasons. (MS and Sony being ahead by 1 gen and the massive development it needs, thought this was obvious but some got offended by my lack of no explanation )

3rd party support? Why would core gamers jump ship? (3) Not to mention 720 will likely be shown next E3, for release in 2013, before the WiiU releases, and show a massive upgrade that will really get core gamers excited.

(4) The core aspects of WiiU are already on PS360, and have been for 5/6 years ...

1) That's a bold assumption to make right now. For all we know, the Zelda clip could be in 1080p and 60 FPS, and even if they aren't, I'd say it still outclasses what we see on the HD consoles. Don't jump to conclusions here.

2) Really? I don't think anything is obvious here, for all we know Nintendo has been working on this for a long time, and it could easily be on par PSN, which would be more than enough to start off with.

3) I'm guessing Microsoft will put a bigger focus on Kinect, rather than pushing graphical prowess. It might be stronger than the WU, but not by enough.

4) What exactly are you considering to be the "core aspects" here? You've completely neglected the controller, which is looking pretty awesome to me. Couple that with great graphics, third party support and being first to market, and there is a clear reason for consumers to jump to the next big thing.

I'm going to wait and see before I count out the Wii U's graphics as "on par" with the current HD consoles, because it is likely that these games are running at 1080p @60fps vs the sub-720p and below 30fps performance of many HD console games, and I doubt many of the visuals we have seen are representative of what the system can do; on top of that I believe many of the people who are making this complaint would make it regardless of what was demoed, and they would claim that Crysis 2 at 1080p with ultra-high detail was essentially a HD console game.

On the topic of third party support, the developers don't have to "jump ship" and getting significant third party support is probably much easier with this system than with the Wii. Rather than Nintendo having to fight publishers to devote $10 to $20 Million to producing a game from the ground up for the Wii, Nintendo can argue for $5 to $10 Million be devoted to produce an enhanced port for the Wii U; and since this would be used by strong teams to create enhanced versions of good games this money would probably result in better results for everyone.

I wasn't talking about devs jumping ship, I was talking about core gamers.

What happens next gen though when PS4 and 720 are miles ahead again? It'll be the same scenario all over again.

Have you forgotten how bad the graphics were on 360 and ps3 in the beginning of their lives? What makes you expect developers to maximize the WiiU capabilities at launch?

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

@Seece,

Since my last post was screwed up, the question I have is can Sony or Microsoft release a meaningful improvement over the Wii U's capabilities?

Many gamers would argue that there isn't a meaningful difference between Crysis 2 at 1080p in ultra high detail and the HD console version of the games; and this will likely be several times the difference between the Wii U and Sony/Microsoft's next generation systems. Certainly, the resolution may need to be downgraded 1280x1080 (or even 720p) and/or the framerate may need to be reduced to 30fps but I doubt people would care about these downgrades.

Haha, I don't think so Maxwell

Don't go locking threads just because they're not pro Nintendo ok? I already cleared this with a mod, it was not flambait at all, Nintendo specifically said 'We will win back the core' and now I'm asking how.

The online thing IS obvious, MS and Sony are 1 gen ahead of them, self explanatory :-S

Except you'd be crying foul all in the mod jobs if something similar is said against Kinect or MS but whatever man it'll be on you and whoever approved this thread if it goes down in flames

No I wouldn't, not everyone defends every move right or wrong their favourite company do ^^ only have to check out my opinions on MS conference this year to see that. I see you rated Nintendo fairly high
