It's Nintendo's fault why we still haven't got a proper Kingdom Hearts 3 from SquareEnix. SE is following Nintendo's foot steps. They're probably thinking all we need to do is keep making these side stories with no real bearing on the actual story line and we'll be rich because these gamers will keep eating them up.

And now ubisoft is making a 4th Assassin's Creed game yet not actually make ACIII! Even though Brotherhood was an amazing game with a fun multiplayer aspect I'm not going to even bother with Revelations. These companies need to stop milking these franchises with dumb sidestories that try to expand the backstory or the universe they live in and just continue the story of the main line.

I finally believe you're actually being serious...

I don't Kingdom Hearts' situation is the same as Zelda's. For starters, all the KH games are much more tightly linked together by story, it's almost like a series of movies or something. Zelda games aren't like that at all, I know it's been said a lot about Nintendo games but it really is about the gameplay and the adventure aspect more than it is about a long deep story that binds all the games together

Look at other Nintendo games for reference, Do you not count SMW as a sequel to SMB3? How about DKCR and DKC3? Just cuz it doesn't have a number attached doesn't mean it's not a true sequel to the franchise, especially when having a coherent story is not even close to a priority to these games

I see your point with a series like Kingdom Hearts, which has a main storyline for its games, they've been making spin-offs and remakes for too long. I don't see how it applies to a series like Zelda though

I wish I still had my old SNES Control Deck box, where "Zelda III" was listed on the side as a launch title, along with F-Zero and others. We already got the game.

Ok I admit this isn't a real thread. I enjoy all Zelda games and AC games though the Kh games a little annoying. In my mind KH:BBS is KH: III and now I'm waiting for KH IV.This just spawned for a conversation I was having with a friend about him not playing Brotherhood or Revelations because he said they wern't numbered sequels.

I liked the "adult" link games - OOT and TP. Majoras mask was ok.

@OP, thanks for a great read! I'm guessing you really don't care what they call it but this was an interesting perspective!

@Raze, shall I assume you're really anticipating Skyward Sword then?

I also believe that Nintendo themselves don't think too hard about a coherent timeline.

Why should they? Every game can be played without knowing the others. There's no connection.

Hey manuel, you're in Japan. Could you please tell us what the Japanese call the game that we in the West know as "A Link to the Past"?

The Triforce of the Gods.

I believe.

That sounds awesome!

Technically A Link To The Past IS Zelda 3... it's basically a "prequel" to the first one, not a side story or set "thousands of years in the future" (I have no idea where the heck you came up with that lol.)

There's no point in hoping for a "true" sequel anyway because the Zelda timeline is pretty much FUBAR at this point.  Basically you can expect Nintendo to release a new Zelda game every 3-5 years or so that completely reboots the story, while essentially being a remake of the original Zelda or ALTTP in some way.

Personally I would love for Nintendo to make some kind of open world, non-linear Zelda game, which is essentially what the first one was since you could start out by practically going almost anywhere and tackling the dungeons in almost any order, but I doubt it'll happen since lately Nintendo seems to favor the very linear, story-driven type of structure for its Zelda games.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Link to the Past is before Zelda 1 and 2, it says in the instruction manual.
