Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Trades increased by 200% since PSN crash

http://www.psu.com/PSN-downtime-prompts-increase-in-PS3-trade-ins--a011635-p0.php

PlayStation Network’s on-going downtime has prompted frustrated punters to trade in their PlayStation 3’s for an Xbox 360, reports EDGE.

The site claims that a number of retailers have observed a noticeable spike in the number of PS3 trade-ins during the weeks that followed Sony’s decision to pull the plug on PSN after the system was infiltrated by hackers.

Under conditions of anonymity, one high street chain told the site: "In the first week of downtime we did not really see any major change in sales or trades.”

"However from the second week onwards we have seen an increase of over 200 percent on PS3 consoles being traded in, split almost 50/50 between those trading for cash and those taking a 360 instead."

Elsewhere, a retail source based in the South West of the UK reported a “massive increase” in the number of PS3’s being traded in as of late, with many users – apparently those belonging to “the hardcore online shooter crowd” - swapping their consoles for a 360.

Belgian indie retailer Gameswap also painted a similar picture: . "At the end of each month people come to sell their consoles. People that need money [to pay bills]. What's different this time around is that that they are bringing in PS3s together with all their games and they don't want money, they want an Xbox 360. In every case it is because of Black Ops and or Modern Warfare 2,” said the company.

"We're just ten days into the month and already we have an increase of 200 percent in PS3s coming into the store compared to all of March. Normally we sell them really fast, but not this time. We've only sold 30 to 40 percent of our inventory right now."

I can vouch for this. At Gamestop we are seeing much higher trade in's on systems and sales on new ones are way down

Its dissapointing really the PS3 is a great system but Sony really need to fix this as quick as possible. The "hardcore" gamers know that PSN is at the most a week or two away from coming back but to the casual consumer this has made a huge hit on Sony's image. Especially in the states where the Playstation name isn't as strong.

don't worry i believe these people will get a new PS3 when price cut... ^^

Well after e3 they might regret it. :P

lol............ casuals

@goforgold

You do realized that at least 50% of all PS3 players would be labeled as "casual" by the people on these forums don't you? The fact is that most players on both the PS3 and 360 only purchase 2 - 3 games a year and most of the time its vary large mainstream titles like Madden and Call of Duty. The actual gaming landscape is FAR different than what you see on these boards that's why I can't help but laugh at how rediculous "core" gamers are sometimes in terms of discussing gameing trends.

Look at games like Killzone that get massive internet hype and in comparision to install base sell very low numbers. Why is that? Its because the majority of consumers aren't "core" players they are casuals. They don't get on the internet looking at reviews and trailers on all the "core" games coming out. They want big franchises they are familiar with and their friends play.

More gamers need to actually get a correct perspective on sales and work in retail, because trust me it will shock you how mainstream and casual ALL console demographics are, not just the Wii.

And yes PS3 sales are in the toilet at Gamestop right now, why do you think we are offering $100 off brand new systems to our PowerUp Rewards members? Here's a hint, because they aren't exactly flying off the shelves.

we will have to check next weeks sales charts, imo only a sad retard will trade in. if it was something permenant then its understandable but if its temp theres simply no point.
