500,000 or more copies= not a flop

As others have said, it's a combination of "is it profitable?" and "did it meet expectations?" Until you at least begin to narrow down what kind of games you're talking about, no numbers can really be given.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

Depends on how much it needs to sell to make a profit. As long as the game turns a profit, it is a technical success.

But I'd assume that the production value of Zack and Wiki was probably not that high, meaning the game probably only needed to sell about 150k-250k to turn a profit. And if we take into account shipments Z&W has probably hit that.

 He basically said it

If: Money Made>Production cost  Then it's a success.

Of course, you need to sell a good deal to do that. Developer only makes about 20% of the actual game.

@smash

So if the developer makes $1 off that game.. its considered a sucess..

no, if the game is established by getting its own fanbase its a sucess.

So Okami was a huge success for establishing a wild fanbase, even if Capcom lost money on it?

I think that a console needs to sell 30 million consoles, or more, in order for it to be considered a success.

Well, maybe more, for the Nintendo 64 sold over 30 million consoles, and it isn't considered a success.

In that case, I would say that 40 million consoles sold, or more, should be considered a success. Than again, the Atari 2600 sold over 30 million consoles, and it was considered a success. Same with the Sega Genesis.

Okay, it's 30 million consoles, or more. Damn it, the Nintendo 64 was a success! Piss off! I really think it's safe to officially confirm the 30 million more, or more, as officially successful. You know, the Sega Genesis actually sold 29 million consoles... Does that mean that the number needs to be pushed back down a bit, for the Genesis was considered a success. Wasn't it? I don't know. Naw... Maybe we should push the number back to 40... But that eliminates the successful Atari 2600. Screw it then. 40. 2600 wasn't a success. But it was. Man this is hard.

Woops, this is for video games, not consoles. In that case, either it's over 1 million, meets a particular goal, does as good as a predecessor, or its success depends on what other game you compare it to. Yeah... The success of a game only depends on what other game you compare it to. For example, Super Mario Sunshine is a success when compared to Ratchet and Clank, but a failure when compared to Super Mario 64, in terms of sales. No, it wasn't a failure in terms of reviews. It just barely missed the mark of 64's 95% on Game Rankings, or 94% on Metacritic. Only in terms of sales.
